Back when Movies needed a PG or G Rating, to maximize attendance. Limited objectionable content that is the 'norm' today. Limited foul language. Great storyline, and Yes the Good Guys Win - but pay a price. AC-3 Soundtrack very enjoyable on my retro-90's 5.1 A/V System.

Unfortunately Columbia Pictures (Sony ) didn't invested time and money in adding special features to this movie. Seems now is not popular as was 40 years ago...

David And Gail (Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bissett) are lovers on vacation in Bermuda. While diving a restricted sunken wreck, they find a few artifacts that peak the interest of a local man who says he is a collector of rare glass. This man Cloche (Louis Gossett, Jr.), turns out to be a major drug dealer attempting to retrieve a vial of morphine found by Nolte while diving the sunken WWII munitions ship, GOLIATH. Cloche doesn't want anyone to know about the morphine. Another find on their dive was a silver coin or medallion from the 1700's. Failing to turn up any information on the coin or medallion in the local library, they seek out a famed treasure hunter Romer Treese (Robert Shaw). Treese said that it could be valuable if some sort of identification could be established. He also said that anybody could have just dropped it overboard by accident too. Treese also recognized the morphine ampule from stories told by an old acquaintance, Adam Coffin, who was a hand on board the ship when it was torpedoed back in the 1940's. He said that there were tens of thousands of ampules on board, but before now, nobody had ever found one. There had just been a bad storm, and from a drawing made by Gail, the wreck appeared to have been moved and split open by tidal action, and now appeared to be accessible to divers. Diving this wreck was restricted because since 1945, more than six divers had been killed by unexploded ordinance while trying to gain access. Treese decides to blow up the ship rather than risk the dope falling into Cloche's possession. Nolte dives with Treese to wire explosives in the ship, but Treese decides not to blow it up because of something he found. A lock plate that went to a strong box that took three different keys to open. A three lock box always meant something extremely valuable or something strictly King's business. Either way, it could be very valuable or important, and destroying the old munitions ship would destroy it too. Cloche goes after Nolte's girlfriend and terrorizes her about the morphine ampule, and Treese goes after him to convince him to back off, telling him that the ship is wired to explode. Treese needs Cloche to back off while they look for what treasure is down there. A theory being that a ship sank in the 1700's and the munitions ship sank in the same place and may have come to rest on top of the earlier wreck two hundred years before. The recovered medallion may be relevant to that search. To do this Treese makes a deal to recover the morphine and sell it to Cloche. Over the next few days they find information of a fabulous treasure that may be down there; a treasure supposedly lost in a storm off the Florida coast. While constantly looking for some provenance of the treasure, Cloche is always watching from a distance. Treese and Nolte bring up thousands of the morphine ampules to keep him off their backs. Several pieces of exquisitely designed jewelry for the Spanish King's Fiancee are found, but Cloche gets impatient and goes for the drugs. The ship gets blown up with Cloche and his men, and Nolte manages to find a specific piece of the treasure described in the book, necessary to establish the provenance. The beauty of Bermuda and the crystal clear waters make this an enjoyable movie. Jackie Bissett in a tiny bikini didn't hurt either.Read full review

A very good movie from 1977 based on a Peter Benchley novel. It is a mystery/action movie starring many known names: Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw, Eli Wallach, Louis Gossett Jr. and Jacqueline Bisset. There is another uncredited star that has many exciting scenes-you will understand once seeing the movie. It has lots of underwater scenes featuring the main attraction of the movie Jacquiline Bisset in just a T-shirt readily showing just how attractive she is. By today's standards this is really quite tame, but at the time it was quite risque. : ) But that aside the story is good, has some plot twists and a fine cast, that puts out some fine acting efforts. Bermuda not being a common story locale gives the movie a different and interesting flavor. The story is about the search for sunken treasure and along the way coming upon some unexpected turns and some unsavory characters. If you like any of the stars, tropic locales, Peter Benchley, a good mystery/action story-and there is some romance, or just a good solid story you will like this. It is well paced not breakneck speed and not plodding along. I would recommend. I enjoyed it in the past and still enjoy it very much so. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope it helps you in deciding to purchase or watch the movie. Give it a try and I am sure you will not be disappointed. GaryRead full review
