About this product

Product Information

Instead of choosing death (his punishment was eternal life), Kain decided to rule the world of Nosgoth at the end of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. With the Soul Reaver in hand, he had become power hungry, completely forgetting what his original goal was -- to avenge his own death by seeking out the people who murdered him.

His empire was built on the foundation of vampires and monstrous beings -- human life had become non-existent. Kain saw to it that every human was punished in some way; they were turned into vampires, or given the ultimate punishment of death. Raziel helped his empire grow and eventually surpassed Kain in duty, rank, and leadership. Needless to say, the ruler was not happy.

Because he felt threatened by Raziel's power, Kain sentenced him to the void -- a swirling pool of burning energy. Raziel was thrown over the side of a cliff and began his long descent into whatever hell he was being banished to; his flesh began to burn and his body began to deteriorate. He awoke to the sound of the Elder, a supernatural being who brought him back to life.

Raziel had been in the void for centuries and become nothing more than a deformed being-- his wings had been destroyed, his mouth gone, and his body eaten by acid. The Elder explained that it was now Raziel's destiny to restore Nosgoth to its former state and destroy Kain once and for all. Instead of feasting on the blood of others, he was to collect the souls of lifeless vampires.

Thus sets the premise behind Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, the gothic third person follow-up to Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Though Raziel's ultimate goal is to destroy his nemesis Kain, getting there will be a long, difficult task. Nosgoth is filled with ravenous monsters and vampires, massive buildings and structures, puzzles, and other dangerous hazards.

Raziel can exist in two different worlds -- the spectral and material realms. The material realm is the actual world, in which a human would exist; it is where puzzles are solved and combat is done with weaponry. The spectral realm is a twisted version of the material realm in that everything is much darker. Raziel has different powers for each -- in the material realm he can use weapons and open doors and in the spectral realm, he can walk through walls (once the ability is learned).

After the Soul Reaver is obtained, players will then have to search out glyphs -- magical spheres that give Raziel supernatural power. Each has a different function: the fire glyph emits fire attacks and the sunlight stone incinerates enemies with energy. Finding them is often a puzzle as some are in the spectral realm and some are in the material plane.

Soul Reaver uses a targeting system in which Raziel will circle his foe. Depending the realm he is in will determine what he can do. In the material realm, he can pick up spears off walls and skewer enemies. In the spectral realm, he'll have to find other means of obliterating foes. After destroying monsters, Raziel will have to eat their souls-- this replenishes his health, which is constantly draining.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver features over 45 minutes of spoken dialog combined with over a hundred full-motion video sequences and in-game cinematic, to further the story. A hub system of movement (via warp gates) is used to eliminate loading time between areas.

A Twisted Tale of Revenge & Start to A Great Series

The graphics may be slightly outdated, but the game holds up overall. The first game sets the stage for this Legacy of Kain offshoot. The Soul Reaver Games really do stand on their own. I would recommend ditching the analogs and playing with the D-Pad for combat if you can help it though. It's far less choppy. The characters, background, & history create a story-line that is both believable and entertaining. For those who don't appreciate hours of puzzles and logic games along with their gratuitous violence, it may not be the right series. I absolutely love these games, and the follow ups are just as good if not better.

  • poorly organized game book

This review is for the optional game tip book, not for the video game itself. Sorry I got it mixed up! The game tip book is fragile, as the pages aren't securely glued (this is a serious manufacturer's flaw, as I have seen it before from this particular company), so you end up taping the whole damn book together again eventually. Also, this is nothing but a text walkthrough of the game. Maps would have been nice so as to help navigation. If you lose your place in the book, or even worse if you miss something, you have to try and hunt it down, which isn't easy. Again, a map with item location indicators and what you need to get those items would have been REALLY helpful. Finally, at least a quick review of tactics vs common enemies would have been nice, since what's currently present ...

  • Very Enjoyable game, Brutal fighting and Strategic thinking

This is one of my many favorite games! It has a great story line. It is in the Legacy Of Kain Series of games. However I have never played Blood Omen which is supposed to be the first game in the series then Soul Reaver. I played this one first and feel that you do not have to play Blood Omen to follow the Story. This game takes a different path that blood omen does since the blood omen series gives you more of the story through Kain. I much prefer Raziel as the main character. I will say this much once you play through this soul reaver you will be itching the play the second one. The characters voices are quite poetic the way they talk and the story it basically about seeking vengeance and power. You will find the fighting sequences are a little different than what you would be normally ...

  • The legacy of kain goes in a new direction

Few games in history have had a story as compelling as this one. In legacy of kain: Soul reaver, you play as Raziel, a vampire lieutenant who has had his wings broken and cast into oblivion by the mighty vampire lord Kain. Raziel's body is broken, but he is brought back to life by The Elder God to kill Kain and his treacherous brethern. The real novelty of this game is that you cannot really die... not really anyways. When you are "Killed" you merely materialize in what is known as the spectral realm, and you have to feed on souls so you can rematerialize in the material world. This dynamic allows for a great variety of gameplay elements and puzzles that will really strain your brain. All the great voice acting, the spooky environments and immense boss battles all serves to give the ...

  • It's A Classic !!!

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for the Playstation One (PS1) was one of the First games I played on the Console. It has a Excellent Storyline, and gameplay is smooth, so it's easy to pick up, and very hard to put down. One of the main reasons I purchased it on Ebay was because the copy I brought was in EXCELLENT condition: The jewel case was intact, The Game Manual was included, and the game Disc did not have a single scratch on it. It is VERY RARE to find a used PS1 Game in this kind of condition. The bottom line is this: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is the best game of the Legacy of Kain Series. If you can find a Working copy of this game, be sure to buy it right away. Thank you for reading my review.
