For the next five years, he conducted research on plants and animals from around the globe, amassing a body of evidence that would culminate in one of the greatest discoveries in the history of mankind--the theory of evolution. &&L/P&&LPDarwin presented his stunning insights in a landmark book that forever altered the way human beings view themselves and the world they live in. In &&LIThe Origin of Species&&L/I, he convincingly demonstrates the fact of evolution: that existing animals and plants cannot have appeared separately but must have slowly transformed from ancestral creatures. Most important, the book fully explains the mechanism that effects such a transformation: natural selection, the idea that made evolution scientifically intelligible for the first time. &&L/P&&LPOne of the few revolutionary works of science that is engrossingly readable, &&LIThe Origin of Species&&L/I not only launched the science of modern biology but also has influenced virtually all subsequent literary, philosophical, and religious thinking. &&L/P&&LP&&LBGeorge Levine&&L/B, Kenneth Burke Professor of English Literature at Rutgers University, has written extensively about Darwin and the relation of science and literature, particularly in&&LI Darwin and the Novelists&&L/I. He is the author of many related books, including &&LIThe Realistic Imagination, Dying to Know&&L/I, and his birdwatching memoirs, &&LILifebirds&&L/I. &&L/P

  • Admit it: After 150 years this old book is as dull as a bowling ball

Darwin's groundbreaking work is itself very difficult to read. It's the kind of book that we all like to own but don't have the determination to actually get through, just because the material is dull and the language is outdated. So, I haven't read it, I just TRIED to read it. So, I recommend you get a "pretty" version, because this is one publication that is just going to sit there on the shelf so you will "look" scholarly. Just remember, no matter what you learn about its myriad problems, never question evolution.

  • Groundbreaking book on the theory of evolution

Classic book. Fascinating. The foundation of evolutionary biology.
