About this product

Product Information

A Navy SEAL's firsthand account of American heroism during a secret military operation in Afghanistan. Inspiration for a major motion picture by Mark Wahlberg. On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive. This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers. A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow-by-blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich, moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare-and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

    Reading backwards

I started reading 'Service' first. Once I finished his book, I had to get L.S. Marcus Luttrell understands commitment to God and country. He writes of his unwavering love for his brother Morgan and their brothers in the Teams. Family and friends blend together in the lives of the SEAL teams. Hard not to become emotionally attached with those Marcus writes about, his fellow SEALS. I'm reading on !

  • Lone Survivor gave me perspective

This book gave me a real insight into the training and the brotherhood of the Seals. I have allways had much respect for the military but this not only gave me a new higher respect but also adjusted my perspective on what it means to be an American. These men are the deffinition on the word HERO. At first I thought the story was slow and took forever to get to the actual incident I had heard about that this book was written about. So I continued with an open mind and became just as wrapped up in the explanation of what it takes to become part of this elite fighting force as I was in the incident. The story line doesn't dissapoint in the action department and I had to keep reminding myself that this was a real life event and not a Hollywood fantasy. It was also nice to have a different ...

  • Lone Survivor

Riveting, very sad, gripping true story of an overwhelmed,[wondering what 2 more SEALS added to the fight wouldve resulted in?]squad of 4 Seals morally[according to war rules made up by stupid civilian bleeding friggin hearts] trapped into revealing their position..going up against a ruthless army of 150- 200 taliban mountain-goat/monkeys with absolutely no consciences in their heads or hearts of who would be their targets...[men,women or children]. This is more of a story about our governments inability to address the enemy with more effectiveness, and better tactics and or strategies..and the weak willed response that make up the Democrats... They really are blame for everything that happened to the USA..The unions are made up of ...

  • Lone Survivor

What an awesome book!! This book is gripping in its description of the action. It makes you feel like you are there on the mountain with the team...well without the danger. The first part of the book describes what the SEAL training is like and what is involved. It makes you sleep well at night knowing that these types of people are on our side. As the story progresses, you feel as if you know each and every SEAL.I wont spoil the ending, but this book will keep you up at night reading as it is not easy to put down. Stories like this also make one reflect on the sacrifices made by each and every soldier. God Bless the United States Armed Forces and thank you each and every one for your service to this country.

  • Afganistan Heroism

This was truly a book that was hard to put down. It held your interest beginning to end. It is such an amazing, touching true account of what it's really like for a SEAL's dangerous mission -- not how our many of our media portrays or downplays what really happens. My husband and I both read this book and feel very blessed to have brave, couragous men such as this devoting their all to keep us safe and protect our freedoms in this country. We bought this book after seeing him interviewed on Fox news channel (FNC). We are loaning it, with our highest recommendation, to other upstanding individuals who would appreciate his story and his service. Living in San Diego County in California, I only wish we could have the opportunity to meet this fine person someday and thank him ...
