Enjoyable CD, but "This One's From the Heart" is Better
Spurred by the success of his CD This One's From the Heart, James Darren released Because of You, a very good album which fails to surpass Darren's previous CD. This One's From the Heart featured many of the most recognized and beloved songs in American culture. Because of You continues to draw on romantic, Sinatra-style songs, but the selections are less well known and lack some of the energy that marked Darren's earlier work. Star Trek: DS9 fans who loved Darren as Vic Fontaine may still be interested in this CD, but be aware that these songs were not featured in DS9 episodes. If you want those tracks, get This One's From the Heart. Fans of the Rat Pack, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, and the other great crooners will enjoy Because of You. Darren's ... This CD is a follow-up to James Darren's wonderful "This One's From the Heart," which featured songs done by his Vic Fontaine character in the Star Trek series. But it's a mistake to compare "Because of You" to the previous CD, because this is a much different sort of effort. "This One's from the Heart" focuses on Rat Pack era super hits with a lush big band backing. "Because of You" focuses on a collection of songs that Jimmy personally likes and wanted to include, and he does most of them in a really swinging style. Give this CD a chance and you will discover that it's a fantastic set of recordings. I'm twenty years younger than Jimmy, so I'm not a Sinatra/Bennett baby. That was parent stuff.
