Bates' Commanding Performance in a Stephen King Film
Kathy Bates gives another powerhouse performance in another film based upon an adaptation of a Stephen King novel. This film & story depict a scenario that is chillingly too true to reality. It's mood is sullen & yet winds up with featuring a kind of triumph. Kathy Bates establishes herself as one of the finest character actors in a Stephen King melodrama in the late 20th century. Taylor Hackford directed the film about Dolores Claiborne (Bates); an abused widow of a father-molested daughter (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Dolores (Bates) works as a do-it-all-housemaid for a socialite widow with disabilties who, now elderly, dies after falling down the stairs. Claiborne is caught holding a heavy rolling pin over her body & accused of murdering her employer since she surprisingly left all of her ... Claiborne is caught holding a heavy rolling pin over her body & accused of murdering her employer since she surprisingly left all of her estate to Dolores, unbeknownst to the benefactor. 18 years prior, Claiborne's pedophile, wife-abusing, alcoholic husband was found dead in their home's well. The molested daughter blamed Dolores for her dad's death. Christopher Plummer plays the detective who's after Dolores, in the past & in the present, presuming that Dolores is guilty of committing both her husband's & employer's murders. Plummer's performance is so effective he makes me detest his character. Back when her husband was found dead, Plummer was suspicious of the new widow; this time, when the socialite widow dies he goes head-strong after Claiborne for murdering for money. Stephen King wrote the novel that travels back & forth from the past to the present. As usual, there is a twist in the end that King's story reveals through another brilliant performance by Bates. Bates & Leigh together are an on-screen mother-daughter match that remains unrivaled~
