It is always difficult to try to recreate a classic movie, so Joel and Ethan Coen took the premise of Alexander Mackendrick's beloved 1955 Ealing Studio caper comedy, THE LADYKILLERS, as the basis for coming up with their own entertaining and bizarre remake. Tom Hanks stars as Goldthwait Higginson Dorr, Ph.D., a would-be professor who talks his way into the root cellar of Mrs. Munson (Irma P. Hall), where he and his supposed band will practice their "Renaissance music." But they are actually plotting to tunnel through to steal a mint from a riverboat casino. The motley crew of incompetent criminals includes Marlon Wayans as Gawain MacSam, a hip-hoppity thug pretending to be a janitor; J.K. Simmons as movie prop man and demolition "expert" Garth Pancake, who has problems with intestinal bowel syndrome; Tzi Ma as the General, a Vietnamese tunnel rat with a Hitler mustache; and Ryan Hurst as a pathetically dumb football wannabe named Lump. Just when they think all is going well, they run into a curious Mrs. Munson, who smells something funny. The film includes several exhilarating Gospel scenes set in southern churches, and lots of riotous site gags. The Coen brothers have done it yet again.

Quality of DVD was excellent especially playing in my Blu-ray player. No issue... movie came out in 2004, and has been a hit ever since. Yes, the old woman loved Bob Jones University, as innocent as she seemed, but professor let her know his work was "Christian" inspired. thanks again you just gotta watch this one. It's a collector's item.

a little foolish for the talents of tom hanks but I guess even he is getting to that old actors stage. I found the best part was the gospel singing. The plot was a bit shall we use the word TACKY. A man of his talents should never have taken this movie, but that's my opinion.

Truly Misunderstood - - a Laugh Riot!
When I initially saw the film Ladykillers, I could (and did) walk away from it easily and repeatedly--but not true for my young son who could not stop laughing nor could he stop watching the movie. He watches it incessantly, until finally I sat down and watched the movie FROM START TO FINISH--it has now become one of my favorite. I can really get immersed into a movie, and this one took some time to absorb me. However, once I could appreciate how the numerous facets of the movie manifests themselves and all surrounding this old lady somewhat oblivious to what is going on around her (but eventually catches on), I must say I think this was put together very well. No need to mention the music--it was dead on and bouncing. But consider the innuendos going on throughout the movie: the ... But consider the innuendos going on throughout the movie: the wandering, albeit intuitive cat; the countenance of the man in the picture (that keeps changing); the lawmen believing the old lady is senile; the music band scam, "the easiest things in the world" may be way too hard for stupid people; this truly pious, devout woman surrounded by hardened criminals; how they all checkout at the end, etc. The movie is hilarious--with tons of comedy and originality--meshed with inspiring gospel tunes, bizarre outcomes and wayward behavior that you can't just look at it once. Kudos to the Coen Brothers for being able to bring this hodge-podge of characters, plots and humor together to keep the viewer laughing and entertained. Until you sit down and watch the movie from start to finish, taking into account the variety of elements, portrayals and developments going on all at once be wary not to trash this one. It will become a classic, for me anyway.

It didn't offend me in the least, I just hadn't heard that before, as I continued watching thew movie all the characters were well played and were pretty much as expected. The first (If my memory serves me) scene was I think people falling off a bridge onto a garbage bardge. That got me chuckling and the more the characters came into play it became actually funny, about 1/2 way through I started to laugh and all of a sudden the heart monitor hook up started to beep then my vital sign started to go crazy, I was laughing as I had not done so in 30 years. A WONDERFUL FILM
I LOVE the Coen brothers 'remake' of The Ladykillers. Not only does Tom Hanks do a terrific job, the rest of the cast is/was superb - in particular Irma P. Hall was simply a delight to watch. I love the music, the storyline, etc. I only wish there were more films like this available.
