I loved the series on television and Idris Elba is really exceptional at playing Luther. Absolutely loved it, so decided to buy it on DVD to watch again.

I had not seen any of this series when aired on TV but recently saw the very first episode and found it quite engaging. At first I thought "Luther" might be a cross between "Cracker" and "Dexter" with Idris Elba playing a maverick cop with issues pitted against the worst kinds of criminals. Which is why I went on to buy the box set. But alas, the more I watch, the more I realise my assumptions were wrong. For starters, the "seasons" are short ... really short! Most are only 4 episodes. So pretty poor on value for money. Is it entertaining? I would have to say yes if only for the shock value of the crimes committed. But actually, that is all this series has to offer - just how bad can the next serial killer be? I have only just finished Season 3 (2 more to go) and while all of the characters get on my nerves in one way or another, the biggest irritation is Luther himself. He swaggers around all moody and full of angst, trying to keep one step ahead of those who would expose him as a dirty cop yet never getting any credit for the ridiculous personal sacrifices he makes in order to catch the bad guys. And why does he have to live in such squalid dumps? It just doesn't make any sense. And then there is Alice Morgan - crazy, clever and a killer who just happens to pop up everywhere and anywhere when Luther needs the services of a handy little helper. Totally stupid. The only saving grace was Warren Brown who played DS Justin Ripley but regrettably he has just exited. Now to the biggest problem of all ... the plot lines. The holes are gaping! The continuity mistakes monumental and the stories totally far fetched! If your leg was shot by a sawn-off shotgun at close range, you wouldn't be able to get off the floor let alone drive a car, run up several flights of stairs and after catching the baddie, walk off (with a bit of a limp) into the distance. But Luther did!! And it seems with every episode, the implausibility just gets bigger and bigger. Goodness knows what I'll discover in Seasons 4 and 5! It's a shame really because this could have been a very dark, very disturbing and very watchable series had a little more care and attention been used to rein in the ridiculous elements.Read full review
