About this product

Product Information

Baseball Saved Us--the groundbreaking children's book about the Japanese American concentration camp experience during World War II After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Shorty and his family, along with thousands of other Japanese Americans, have been forced to relocate from their home to Camp. One day Shorty's dad looks out across the desert and decides they should build a baseball field. Fighting the heat, dust, and freezing cold nights, the prisoners need something to look forward to, even if only for nine innings. So in this unlikely place, surrounded by barbed-wire fences and guards in towers, a baseball league is born. And Shorty soon finds that he is playing not only to win, but to gain dignity and self-respect. Inspired by a long-hidden and shameful part of America's past, and the people who triumphed over it, this modern classic remains a moving story of hope, courage, and endurance. The new 25th Anniversary Edition features an updated cover and author's note.

This item didn’t come in exactly as pictured, but the seller responded immediately and was very gracious in offering me a partial refund even bough I wasn’t expecting one for what I paid for the item. I have bought from this seller before, and they are reputable and stand behind the products they sell. My other transactions with them have been perfect. Great communication. Packaging and price were good. Fairly fast shipping, too. Thanks.

This item came in exactly as pictured, and the seller posted immediately and was very gracious. I didn't ask for a partial refund. Why would I? I bought what I was expecting and received what I paid for the item. Not sure if I have bought from this seller before, but they are reputable and stand behind the products they sell. My future transactions with them will no doubt be perfect. Great communication. Packaging and price were good. Fairly fast shipping, too. Thanks.

  • This is a wonderful book suitable for kids and adults alike

This was one of my favorite books as a kid and I felt a little bit of nostalgia when I saw it on eBay. The book is about a Japanese boy and his family who were relocated to one of the internment camps during World War II. It highlights the struggle that these families went through as well as one boy's individual struggle to gain confidence in himself. At the camp, families banded together to make a baseball field to help pass the time. I loved the history lesson as well as the lesson on making the best of a situation. Written from the boy's point of view helps us to see things as a child might. I would recommend this book to children and to adults because the story is written in such a way that it can appeal to a broad audience.

  • Not what I expected

I bought this book hoping for a children’s book giving insight into the terrible event that happened here in America during World War II: the Japanese people, living in America, being sent to and detained in internment camps. Unfortunately I found that this book was primarily about a boy who feels left out who finds that participating in baseball helps him be accepted by his peers. There is a little bit about the internment camps but not as much as I hoped. Perhaps a better title for this book might be: Baseball Saved Me? The artwork is very well done. I would recommend the book Citizen 13660 for more insight about this horrible event.
