Product Information

John Huston's classic film adaptation of the 1895 novel by Stephen Crane about a young man's first experience in war. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War the film ponders the feelings of anxiety and finally outright fear in a boy preparing for battle. Henry (Audie Murphy) loses his illusions of heroism during his first skirmish, and just prior to engaging the enemy for the second time, he deserts the field of combat and enters an idyllic world of the forest. Witnessing his friend's death and receiving an accidental wound from a retreating soldier, Henry comes to terms with realities of warfare.

Great film. I've had the VHS of this film for years and was updating my collection with DVD'S. Enjoyable film to watch and also has WWII war hero Audie Murphy starring in it.

A very good portrayal by Audie Murphy, the highly decorated war hero. One difference from the book is that the book states ( early in the story) that the youth could see the flickering campfires of the enemy across the river.The movie has a rebel guard across the river talking to Henry ( this makes the story a lot better ). The reb shouts over " you're a right nice feller fer a yank-now don't you go an' git one of them 'little red badges' "(meaning stay safe and don't get yourself shot). Action scenes and battle is realistic but not bloody. The simplistic story is carried well because it is all thru the youth, Henry's eyes. He loses his self-doubt and keeping to himself introspection after he gets a knock on the head by another soldier, bent on running away from the enemy-this is all ... He's lucky no-one in his unit or provost guards saw him run away & he creates the story that he was "separated from the regiment and fought with another" in the confusion. This could have easily happened at Chancellorsville except that Henry is victorious over the rebels at the end of the movie. This did not happen. Ending of the book is sadly deleted from the movie when Henry, now an old man telling war stories to grandson- still has the courage of a lion. He runs into a burning barn to save the horses- and perishes when the barn collapses on him. I felt that would have made the movie a lot better; it certainly made a touching end of the book.

I felt the film followed the book rather well.
This film was quite difficult for me to watch. It is not an easy thing, watching someone that one knows to be brave acting a coward. I believe that Murphy did a very good job playing the part. And John Huston is without a doubt one of the best directors in the business.

One of my all time favorite movies. The characters truly portray the simple ways and lack of sophistication of those times and the complexities of the common men who are swept up in war's madness. Interesting to watch the turmoil endured by Audie Murphy's character.
