Synopsis
The basis for the major motion picture of the same name. An entrancing memoir of how one woman's journey of self-discovery gave her the courage to persevere in re-creating her life. Life is a work in progress, as ever-changing as a sandy shoreline along the beach. During the years Joan Anderson was a loving wife and supportive mother, she had slowly and unconsciously replaced her own dreams with the needs of her family. With her sons grown, however, she realized that the family no longer centered on the home she provided, and her relationship with her husband had become stagnant. Like many women in her situation, Joan realized that she had neglected to nurture herself and, worse, to envision fulfilling goals for her future. As her husband received a wonderful job opportunity out-of-state, it seemed that the best part of her own life was finished. Shocking both of them, she refused to follow him to his new job and decided to retreat to a family cottage on Cape Cod. At first casting about for direction, Joan soon began to take pleasure in her surroundings and call on resources she didn't realize she had. Over the course of a year, she gradually discovered that her life as an "unfinished woman" was full of possibilities. Out of that magical, difficult, transformative year came A Year by the Sea , a record of her experiences and a treasury of wisdom for readers., The basis for themajor motion picture of the same name.An entrancing memoir of how one woman's journey of self-discovery gave her the courage to persevere in re-creating her life. • A Year by the Sea by Joan Anderson

I really enjoyed reading this book. At first I was afraid it was going to be a woe is me husband bashing book but it isn't that way at all. Joan Anderson, like many women in their forties and fifties begins to reflect on how much of herself she's given to others and in doing so how much she has given up, of and for herself. Her sons have married, her husband has taken a new job which requires him to relocate. After some thought and reflection she decides she will not move with him but instead, take some time alone to reflect on the life she's lived and the person she has become. Fortunately for her she just happens to have a cottage on Cape Cod where she can go to do this. Fortunately for all of us who don't have the luxury of moving to a beach house, through this book we are able to see ...

  • Loove this author

After having read two other books by Joan Anderson ( A Walk on the Beach and An Unfinished Marriage) I had to purchas this one as well since I've enjoyed them all so so much. I actually haven't read this one yet but have no doubt it's as good as the others and would highly reccomend these books to anyone as an easy read and very enjoyable. I had gotten away from reading at all for many years and these books got me interested in reading more again.

  • INTRIGUING - I Had To Read It!

I loved everything about it.I could place myself there and really be her.The Cape is my most favorite place on earth.I do wish the book was longer.Anything todo with the Cape or New England or women's issues I always stop and give a second look at.It's a great little book I recommend it to all my friends and they've gone out and bought it.I Loved It!!!

  • A life changing book

The author tells a story about her life stuggles as she finds her way back to herself. It mirrors my thoughts exactly. I am truly inspired.
