The Devil's Arithmetic
The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen is a powerful story about family traditions, inner strenth, courage, and faith. It introduces us to Hannah, a typical teenager who takes for granted the Jewish traditions that are so important to her family. She feels embarrassed by her Grandpa Will's bitterness and rantings about the Nazis and WWII; she cannot relate to the horror her grandfather and Aunt Eva experienced because her own life has been so easy. During the family's celebration of Passover, Hannah opens the door for the prophet Elijah and is trasported back in time to 1942. She finds herself in a small village in Poland right before the Nazi invasion and although she knows what will happen, no one will believe her. The soldiers force Hannah and the other Jewish villagers into ... The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen is a powerful story about family traditions, inner strenth, courage, and faith. She realizes how precious life is and that each person in the camp is truly a hero for surviving one day at time. Every student should read this book. It is filled with touching symbolism and vivid descriptions. The characters are beautifully developed and so real that when one is "chosen" you feel the loss in the depths of your soul. My students loved this book and these are students who never want to read. It is a powerful, yet poignant book.
