Notes
DISCOVER Dave Cox- we GUARANTEE you will love this album! Dave Cox makes a break from his six previous studio albums with the release of 'Shine Your Light". Well, a break, but not a complete departure. There's still vintage Cox contained within, but his musical borders have expanded considerably. The silky smooth production gives a slightly more polished feel than previous releases. Seasoned pros Dave Roe (bass), Kenny Vaughan (Acoustic/Electric Guitars), and John McTigue (drums) comprise a rhythm section at ease with their conductor and with each other. This is a tight unit clearly enjoying themselves. Jimmy Clark (fiddle) and Mike Sweeney (pedal steel) fill out the sound splendidly with tasteful licks throughout. Mr. Cox's attire on the album's cover is apt as he tips his hat to 50's style Sinatra on the opener, 'I was Wrong' and again on the playful 'The New Moon'. Piano, played by Gene Rabbai, is prominently out in front on these tunes along with "Out Of Love" as Cox shows an adept touch at mixing Traditional Country and Jazz music a la Willie Nelson and Marty Robbins. Dave's acknowledgement of his influences while remaining his own man is refreshing. There's more than a touch of resignation in his voice as Dave sings of love's battle scars on 'Pleasure and Pain'. Sammy Barrett plays the female counterpart as she provides a liquid blend above Dave's vocal on this stunningly produced cut. The mood of this tune is a bit somber but also somehow oddly romantic, as if there is a small chance this love will survive. He returns to this theme on the lighthearted and brutally frank 'Happiness to Crapiness', proving there is more than one way to express these sentiments. As for that vintage Cox I mentioned earlier, long-time Cox fans will feel right at home with the humorous yet profound 'Wrong Turns' and a rare cover, 'Midnight Boogie', cleverly arranged by Dave and played at a fever pitch by the band. The album concludes with the inspirational 'Shine Your Light'. This uplifting tune features a mini choir of voices and soulful Gospel singing by Sammy Barrett as she and Dave play off of each other during the outro. There are still more pleasant surprises on this eleven song set that I'll leave for you to discover. Be prepared, because once you put this one in the disc player, it won't be coming out for a long time. Eric Solomon (founding member, WettKiss Vocal Group)
