Because it is excellent for piano students who are beginning to study piano. This book has been used for many, many years and it is a classic in piano lessons.

John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano first grade
My 7-year-old granddaughter just started to study piano. I fondly remembered a few pieces out of this book from when I studied as a young child and wanted to share those memories with her. When this book arrived, I was surprised to find that all the notes are "finger numbered". My granddaughter is being taught to sight read and learn note names so I don't think she will be able to use this book in her regular lessons. On the other hand, we are using it as a supplement for the fun of it and she will play one of my favorite pieces "Swans on the lake" in her spring recital. I love this book for its nostalgic value, the music in is lovely and fun. And even though finger-numbering the notes can develop a dependency for that type of "reading", which can be difficult to overcome as one ... My 7-year-old granddaughter just started to study piano. I wonder if my aforementioned observation could be the reason, especially since I have such a fondness for this first grade book. Nevertheless, I very much enjoy playing the music in this book today.

I also studied piano with the John Thompson books as a girl. I progressed more rapidly than my friends who used other courses. I had a wonderful retired opera singer from England as my teacher and he introduced me to these books. As others have mentioned, they include a good variety of music and have the student playing many of the well-loved classical pieces in arrangements that a novice can play. In fact, I plan to purchase the third grade book (which is far more advanced than other third grade books) and return to playing the pieces I learned as a girl. I have fibromyalgia so some of the classical pieces are becoming difficult for me to play.
