About this product

Product Information

NATIONAL BESTSELLER * "It takes a rare individual not only to see that history can live, but also to make it live for others. James Thom has that gift."-- The Indianapolis News Mary Ingles was twenty-three, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when Shawnee Indians invaded her peaceful Virginia settlement in 1755 and kidnapped her, leaving behind a bloody massacre. For months they held her captive. But nothing could imprison her spirit. With the rushing Ohio River as her guide, Mary Ingles walked one thousand miles through an untamed wilderness no white woman had ever seen. Her story lives on--extraordinary testimony to the indomitable strength of one pioneer woman who risked her life to return to her own people.

This is the third time I've purchased this book, once from a store and twice now from eBay. It keeps disappearing from my house by friends who take it after I go on about how wonderful it is 😄 I'll just keep on telling about it and no doubt keep buying them 🤣

A very intense story of a strong woman in the wilderness and her journey home.

The story of a white woman kidnapped by Native Americans is very compelling. She longed for her husband and children left behind. The majority of the book is her escape and journey back to her family. I enjoyed the book but was emotionally worn out near the end. I don't know how anyone could have made the journey she did. Heartbreaking and very depressing but admire greatly her determination and spirit. Don't think I will read it again in spite of it being a very good book.

  • Follow the River by James Alexander Thom

I was enthused about this true story the moment I began reading Follow the River because the hero is a woman who endured countless adversities and persevered beyond human endurance to find her way back home from being kidnapped by Shawnee Indians by walking hundreds of miles in the wilderness during the late fall and winter months. After her kidnapping, it was very interesting how well and how quickly she adjusted to the rigors of Indian life, which was very different from the life she was accustomed to. However, the one ingredient deeply engrained into her was love, and that's what kept her focus on returning to her family and home. Another reason I love this story is because my heritage is Shawnee Indian and I learned so much about the Indian people. This story answered many ...

  • The best book you'll ever read.

This is by far the best book I have ever read, bar none. Not for one second does the story lapse into boring dribble. The author captivates the reader from the first page . I have read this book twice and will again for sure. I passed it on to my mother, who in turn has bought her own copy and raves about it as well. The vivid acount of the life and the hardship of Mary Ingles is a true story and one that reveals the strength and determination of the human spirit. I cried and laughed my way through this magnificent woman's journey . Simply a treasure. A book for any age over 12. Due to graphic depiction of the settler and indian conflict,I would'nt recommend it to a younger reader. Overall, an excellent choice for anyone who loves to read.

  • The title fits the journey that Mary Ingels took

This book is an inspiration to all who read it. The courage that Mary had was amazing. The love she had for her family was a true love. After the Indians captured her and saw how brave that she was they really admired her, she could have stayed with the Indians and had a good life. But her love brought her through the journey back to her Virginia home. Mary's journey was awesome, filled with terror and hunger. I have camped on the Bluestone River and the New River. I have often thought as I sat on the river bank and look out over the river wondering if Mary's feet had touched the same ground that I walk on. My mother is an avid reader and she bought the book when it first came out in 1981. The book has been read and signed by so many it is held together with a rubber band. This book went ...
