Notes
Tom is an excellent whistler and singer. He began whistling as a child to pass the time. It came naturally to him. People always commented on his whistling, so he stuck with it. By the age of 30, people began calling him 'Whistlin' Tom' and that name has stuck with him. In Philadelphia, when he was tending bar on South Street, customers would specifically visit the bar just to hear him whistle their requests. Philadelphia based, Evening Magazine and it's national affiliate, PM Magazine, picked up on this and then invited him to do segments on their shows, which he did. He performed often in Philadelphia and, at one time, established a telephone answering service called 'Whistlin' Tom's 24 hour Hot Line for Listenin' to Whistlin'', where he would receive an average of 1200 calls per day from people throughout the United States and Canada to hear a friendly little whistlin' melody complete with piano, guitar and, drums. Tom now resides in Key West where he has performed at the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration for many years. Tom often performs throughout the Florida Keys for various community groups, benefits, and fund raisers. He appears in the Key West Video Postcard and The Key West Kaleidoscope, videos featuring various 'characters' in Key West. In the summer of 1998 he whistled his way around Europe on a 'European Tour' spending three months traveling by train and performing in many cities in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. He performed both on street corners and in the various 'Busker' festivals that are popular in Europe during the summer months. For the past six years he has regularly performed for the Elder Hostel in Key West, which is sponsored by Barry University of Miami. Tom is a pucker whistler with a three octave range. There are various types of whistlers such as the pucker whistler, the tongue and teeth whistler, the tongue and palate whistler, and the ventriloquial or, throat whistler. The usual range of the average whistler is an octave to an octave and a half. Two octaves is pretty good, two and a half very good, and three is excellent. Most whistlers whistle only on the out breath but, some whistlers whistle both in and out and still retain pitch and tone as does Whistlin' Tom. Elaine Silver's voice is in top form here, her flexible velvet soprano, warm, full and rich. She sounds fabulous whether she's singing lead or blazing a trail through an intricate harmony. She also contributes great guitar playing. Thouroughly enjoyable.
