The stage is set in New York's Upper West Side in the 1950s, where the area's slums are plagued by racial tensions acted on by two rival gangs: the Puerto Rican Sharks and the Caucasian Jets. In the middle of this mess is young, innocent Maria (Natalie Wood), a Puerto Rican seamstress whose brother, Bernardo (George Chakiris), is the leader of the Sharks. Despite the warnings of Anita (Rita Moreno), Bernardo's fiery girlfriend, Maria falls in love with a young, hopeful Polish boy, Tony (Richard Beymer), who used to belong to the Jets, now headed by Riff (Russ Tamblyn). When Tony, on Maria's urging, tries to stop a rumble between the gangs, tragedy ensues, marking their dedicated love affair with violence and desperation. The infectious, lyrical landmark score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim help round out one of the greatest musical experiences ever captured on film.

When You're a Classic, You're a Classic All the Way
I would imagine only younger people, ages 35 and below, perhaps, would not have, at least, heard of West Side Story. It is the timeless story of Romeo and Juliet, but the names and setting are changed to New York City in the fifties. Moreover, it is set to Leonard Bernstein's memorable musical score accompanied by great choreography and acting. The story pits two ethnic gangs against each other. The Jets and the Sharks; the whites and the Puerto Rican immigrants; the two groups despise each other as did the Capulets and Montagues. As a teacher, I use this film as an example of literary interpretation and also help underscore the mindless tragedy of gang violence and hate. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are both classics in their own right. West Side Story (1998, DVD)
This movie was filmed in New York City at a time when things where very different and did a masterful job of capturing the changes that where going on at that time. West Side Story is considered a classical love story but also won of the best musical and dance motion pictures ever made. For me it brings me back to my child hood growing up in the South Bronx with my family and friends.
