  • Title, "Rise & Fall" says it all.

At a time in US history when there was no income tax, Cornelius Vanderbilt earned two fortunes: shipping (NewJersey>< Manhattan) & Railroads.that opened up Western US for development. In Newport, his opulent mansion, The Breakers, now a visitor attraction, is owned by the Newport Preservation Assn, A decendent fathered celebrity Gloria Vanderbilt whose son Anderson Cooper researched & co-authored this fascinating book.

  • van der Bilt, of the bilt

So far it has been a very easy read for someone that does not do a whole lot of reading. Some very interesting information of the early days of the van der Bilt family.

  • Excess of the Vanderbilt's

It is compelling to find out how the money that was made by one man, unheard off for the times, doubled by one of his sons, within 8 years, was then squandered by everyone that followed, due to excess spending, and mismanagement. Good stories, factual, based on family history, and good writing.
