Reviews
"The greatest strength of Orwell in Cuba lies in the street-level view it affords of ordinary Cubans negotiating the absurdities of daily life as an entrenched regime is losing its grip." --Ian McGillis, Montreal Review of Books
Synopsis
Orwell in Cuba: How '1984' Came to Be Published in Castro's Twilight is a personal account of today's Cuba at a pivotal point in its history, with the Castro brothers passing power on to a new generation. The book is akin to a detective story, as the author investigates how and why a state-run publishing house has come to release a new translation of George Orwell's iconic anti-totalitarian novel Nineteen-Eighty-Four, formerly taboo., "Orwell in Cuba: How '1984' Came to Be Published in Castro's Twilight" is a personal account of contemporary Cuba at a pivotal point in its history, with the Castro brothers passing power on to a new generation. We discover Cuba through the adventures, inquiries, and encounters of a Canadian journalist and writer trying to make sense of the current climate in Cuba and of how Cubans feel about the past, present, and future of their island. "Orwell in Cuba" is also akin to a detective story, as the author investigates how and why a state-run publishing house came to release a new translation of George Orwell's iconic anti-totalitarian novel "Nineteen-Eighty-Four," formerly taboo, in the year 2016. These two quests are intertwined in the book, giving the reader an unusual experience: that of following a suspenseful trail while at the same time becoming increasingly familiar with the Cuban people's relationship to the regime, and absorbing a wealth of information as to how they succeed in coping with the island's often challenging living conditions., Orwell in Cuba chronicles journalist Frédérick Lavoie's attempts to unravel the motives behind the mysterious appearance of a new translation of George Orwell's 1984, formerly taboo in Cuba, just ahead of the country's twenty-fifth International Book Fair. Lavoie works to make sense of how Cubans feel about the past, present, and future of their island - and how the political regime is adapting, or not, to life in the twenty-first century. His intertwined quests give readers the unique experience of following a suspenseful trail while at the same time becoming increasingly familiar with Cubans' relationship to the regime and their strategies for coping with the island's often challenging living conditions., Orwell in Cuba chronicles journalist Frédérick Lavoie's attempts to unravel the motives behind the mysterious appearance of a new translation of George Orwell's 1984, formerly taboo in Cuba, just ahead of the country's twenty-fifth International Book Fair. Good shipping, packaging, and was as described. God value as well, especially with the content of the cd. I am happy to have found this cd of one of the most important animal activists. In the cd, Gary Yourofsky shares the moral imperative of granting animals their negative rights. Like the right not to be enslaved and murdered! He shares the vegan message, a message that in my view, grants animals the same rights as human beings if they were to be trait equalized.
