  • How can we ever understand another's pain?

This book is a real eye opener. Toni Morrison paints a vivid, painful, and grotesque picture and makes the pain in Sethe's heart shine like a sun gone nova. How can one person ever really understand the depth of another person's pain? I'm not sure if it is possible but if it could be put into words the author has succeeded with this book. The character Sethe, a successful runaway slave, who has harbored guilt, resentment, love, hate, bewilderment and a whole array of other emotions she has never understood or been able to share with anyone, becomes a symbol of all slaves. She has been whipped to near death, raped, humiliated, robbed of husband, children, freedom. Forced to commit a terrible crime, or so she believed. When her past comes to haunt her in human form she accepts the being as ...

  • a confusing yet intriguing ghost story

this book is a best seller and has won the nobel. With strong imagery, Morrison explores the world of post slavery and the horrors that happened to one woman, one family because of slavery. Although the book is strong with strong character developement, it lacks the flow of traditional fiction. Morrison confuses the reader by swithcing characters pov's without telling us, leaving us guessing who is telling the story. Also, the stream of conciousness style writting leaves you rereading paragraphys trying to see if you missed something. The book does have its amazing points but over all i found it hard to read yet hard to put down.

  • Others recommend the movie before reading the book,

Hard to follow what is happening in story.
