Welles plays rogue seaman Michael O'Hara, complete with Irish brogue. After saving beautiful Elsa Bannister (Rita Hayworth) from thieves in Central Park, O'Hara is requested to serve on the yacht owned by Elsa's husband, Arthur (Welles veteran Everett Sloane), an older man who needs special crutches in order to walk. A fiery passion lurks underneath the relationship between Michael and Elsa; in actuality, the marriage between Welles and Hayworth was ending at the time the film was shot. Enter George Grisby (the eerie-sounding Glenn Anders), one of Bannister's associates and a man with a very special offer for O'Hara, luring him into a web of lies and murder.Although Welles claimed he made THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI just to finance other projects and the film does not show off his typical Wellesian flair, it still plays like a classic noir that draws the viewer in and never lets go. The characters are complex and fascinating, and the tension runs high and hot as the truth behind all the lies starts to come out. The film is most famous for its thrilling climax, which takes place in a hall of mirrors. Welles might have considered THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI workmanlike, but this noir thriller is only as workmanlike as any Welles film can be.

Interesting, Artistic Film Noir By and Starring Welles
The Lady from Shanghai (1947) is a good film noir for which Orson Welles is the writer, director, producer, and star. I appreciate Welles' artistry as a filmmaker, which is more than evident in this film, but he is not one of my favorites. I think I would have enjoyed better a film noir starring Cagney or Bogey, but The Lady from Shanghai was certainly an interesting and artistically shot picture. Rita Hayworth gives an excellent performance as the unhappy wife of a very wealthy, crippled lawyer. The husband, a shark in the courtroom, is eery and commanding, and he has a partner in his firm who seems a bit off his rocker. Welles, who plays an Irish sailor, becomes involved with this strange company when he rescues Hayworth from muggers and is practically forced by her and the husband ... Once onboard the yacht, Welles finds out just how queer these people are. Hayworth pursues Welles romantically, and the husband's law partner pays Welles to convince the world he has murdered him so he can escape his life under a new alias. But the murder plot is more complicated than Welles thinks, and Hayworth and her husband become involved in the plot as well in an exciting ending. I found the plot rather complicated and, at times, difficult to follow. There were frequent changes in why someone was apparently doing what he or she was doing. As is good in film noir, it was tough to tell who was on which side. I recommend The Lady from Shanghai to fans of Orson Welles and to those who enjoy high-quality, artistic filmmaking. Fans of Rita Hayworth will also like watching her great performance as the title lady.

The main criticism --- that all the characters are unlikable --- is accurate, but not a problem today, when interesting films don't necessarily make us feel happy. Orson Welles was definitely ahead of his time as a director, and the camerawork is on a par with the best of Alfred Hitchcock. Ironically, the only problem with this film is Welles as an actor --- and you can see it from the shot on the DVD cover. Mike (Welles) is supposed to be a young, naive sailor, overcome with passion for Rosalie (Rita Hayworth), and manipulated by the other, wealthy characters. But in the photo, Rosalie is throwing herself at Mike, and he's pushing her away as if he is bored, and about to deliver a Shakespearean monologue. In fact, Mike DOES deliver ... He doesn't throw himself into the action; he holds himself apart, observing and commenting on it. If, despite a lack of formal education and experience with high society, Mike is intelligent and canny enough to realize he's being used, why does he go along with it? He SAYS it's because he loves Rosalie, but he doesn't make us FEEL it. In the love scene in the aquarium, he seems, appropriately enough, like just another cold fish. THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI is a must-see for film students and noir fans. Rita Hayworth is perfectly cast, showing she can do more than sing and dance. It's too bad Welles didn't step down and cast a more passionate, rough-edged, younger-looking leading man.
