"Food writer Nancie McDermott has compiled 65 of the most sinfully delicious cakes south of the Mason-Dixon line, and the result could make even Scarlet O'Hara weak in the knees...The recipes all have a down-home feel, but many of the cakes also have a touch of elegance."Choclatier Magazine, December 2007"Every recipe has a charming headnote, often showing a bit of historical research, and about a third are illustrated with color photos. McDermott's handy introductory chapter on cake baking includes the very Southern advice to buy butter on sale and keep it in the freezer 'so you are baking-ready 24/7.'"Los Angeles Times, August 22, 2007"For my money, the grandest-looking cakes in this book are the brown sugar pound cakes baked in a tube pan with a lush mass of caramel glaze drooling down its sides, and the classic coconut cake, with its feathery, dazzling white frosting. When I brought the coconut cake to the office, people in the street were literally lunging at it."Los Angeles Times, August 22, 2007"It's little wonder that Southerners are proud of their baking history. • A True Southern Gem

At first glance the picture on the jacket draws you right in. You want to get a fork and a glass of cold milk and dig right in. Ms. McDermott has done an outstanding job incorporating all that is best in Southern style cakes. From the Brown Sugar Pound Cake to the rich Mississippi Mud Cake, sweet jelly rolls and the classic Hummingbird Cake are just a tip of what is in this mouth watering book! These cakes could make the South rise again, but only to go running for a slice or two of the glorious cakes in this book.

  • “Mmmmm

  • Finally found a cake book I really like.

I really like this book. It has such a nice variety of cake recipes, some favorites with a spin on them. I have search a lot of books but many of them did not have pictures. This book is well illustrated. Its not to big, and will travel well when I go to visit my family and they want a new cake recipe. I can't wait to try some new recipes. You will love this book, too. Happy Baking!!!!!

  • Old recipes of cakes

I am happy with the recipes in this book. I like the fact that the recipes are very old and are tried and true. They have history and that makes them good.
