A Terrific Bible Primer for Children
I've used an earlier edition of this very same book (same illustrations & stories) for my two youngest children. I've just purchased a copy for my two young grandchildren who are spending some time with us. Here are some pros and cons from my perspective as a Christian father, grandfather, missionary, and pastor: PROS: 1) Illustrations are simple but engaging enough that one with basic Bible knowledge can tell the stories based upon the pictures and chapter headings; great for toddlers & preschool non-readers 2) The text is plain enough and stays pretty well within the context of the actual Biblical narrative; thus, it can be read by those not as familiar with the Bible; & add'lly, text is simple enough for children just learning to read. CONS: 1) Some of the illustrations fall into the ... I've used an earlier edition of this very same book (same illustrations & stories) for my two youngest children. CONS: 1) Some of the illustrations fall into the traps handed down from unbiblical traditions. A few examples are 1) Abraham and Sarah look pretty old and feeble just because Sarah had already gone into her menopausal years. She was beautiful enough beyond 60 yrs old for Pharaoh to want her to wife, and beautiful enough at 89 yrs for Abimelech of Gerar to want her. Abraham lived to 175 yrs and was mighty enough to muster his 318 servants and his confederates, Aner, Mamre, Eshcol to pursue and defeated 4 kings that captured Lot and rose to conquer and subdued 5 kings. 2) The illustration of Samson isn't as bad as many historically, yet, it does lean toward an illustration of a larger, stronger man. If his strength were so obvious, why would the Philistines have to deceive him through Delilah to find the source of his strength? Samson was a man like any other, who by God's grace and Spirit, deafeated the Philistines. 3) Any illustration of Jesus is going to be a problem, because the scriptures are clear that the LORD's Christ "had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him" (Isaiah 53:2, ESV); & that is not to mention the imagery that violates the heart of the 2nd Commandment; though its essence is not to create images to be worshiped (things in heaven, things on earth or things under the earth), any image or representation of the invisible God, or even the incarnate Son, the 2nd Person of the Trinity, is particularly offensive to many Reformed believers. SUGGESTIONS IN THESE CASES TO OFFSET THE CONS: 1) Instances like those mentioned above should be taught clearly and truthfully to the children, even at the youngest age. We are teaching them the truth, therefore, to knowingly allow them to be taught an untruth is a serious sin. 2) Supplement Bible stories with family catechism recitation/memorization, family creedal readings, and include those children in family Bible readings from the actual Bible. We use A PURITAN BIBLE PRIMER and A PURITAN FAMILY DEVOTIONAL for our family devotion times, and we rather view the reading of THE BEGINNER'S BIBLE as the supplement to our regular devotions. RECOMMENDATION: Those negatives notwithstanding, I wholeheartedly recommend this book as a resource to be used and enjoyed for the raising of our children and children's children unto Christ for God's glory and the excellency of His infinite majesty.

Bible stories are simple, easily understood and beautifully illustrated
I purchased this book for my 5 year old grandson because other reviewers said that it was the best children's bible available. This is the original version. There is a newer version by the same publisher, and this edition is actually out of print. All I can say is that he loves it. The stories are simple and easy for young children to understand and remember. The illustrations are beautifully done and are actually very cute. The book takes you through both the Old and New Testaments. I love this little Bible. I teach a Bible class in a mission church in the innercity. Some of these little Bibles were donated, and I use them for my curriculum. Each little preschooler has his own Bible and follows along as I read the story. As my class grew, I ran out of Bibles and this particular version had been discontinued in the stores. Hurrah for Ebay! I was able to find more and every child's is alike. When my class grows again, I will turn to Ebay to find more Bibles like this! Thank you, Ebay!I love this little Bible. The perfect book to introduce youngsters, especially emergent readers to the Bible
It is as true to the Word as one sees in a Bible story book. It is well-written, interesting, and wonderfully illustrated. It is perfect for youngsters just beginning to learn the Bible and good reading for children up to age 8 or 9 (who aren't versed in Scripture).
