About this product

Product Information

Elegant, passionate, and filled with the love of God's creation, Abraham Joshua Heschel's The Sabbath has been hailed as a classic of Jewish spirituality ever since its original publication--and has been read by thousands of people seeking meaning in modern life. In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel, one of the most widely respected religious leaders of the twentieth century, introduced the influential idea of an 'architecture of holiness that appears not in space but in time. Judaism, he argues, is a religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the materials things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that 'the Sabbaths are our great catherdrals.'

Reviews
"Clearly Heschel's most beloved book,The Sabbathis much more than a book about the Sabbath. It is, rather, our century's most illuminating study of the dynamics of Jewish ritual living."--Dr. Neil Gillman, author ofSacred Fragments "Timeless. Read it, and be ready to be changed."-The Reverend Richard John Neuhaus, editor in chief ofFirst Things "Heschel'sThe Sabbathis easily the primary text for all subsequent American Jewish spirituality."-Rabbi Lawrence Kushner, author ofGod Was in This Place

I supposed to get a used book in good condition. However, the book general condition is regular to bad. On top of this, the pages are mostly handwrited and marked with a blue pen.

Incredible book for me. The authors knowledge, understanding and insight was so compelling. I have read it several times and will read it several more. Always something new to learn each time I turn a page.

  • Essential Reading on the Holiest of Jewish Traditions

Abraham Joshua Heschel's masterful study on the most important and holiest of Jewish traditions, Shabbat, is essential reading for Jews and anyone interested in Judaism. Rabbi Heschel distinguishes between space, the material world, and time, the realm of the holy. It by no coincidence that God first created light, by which we can measure time. "Six days a week, we wrestle with the world, wringing profit from the earth; on the Sabbbath, we especially care for the seed of eternity planted in the soul." In other words, we go "from the world of creation to the creation of the world." The Sabbath is a short work, but absorbing the scholarly material takes some time. But readers willing to do so will be rewarded with much to think about, all rendered in beautiful prose.

  • This is a power packed, full of wisdom little book.

This is a power packed, full of wisdom little book. Heschel digs into the mysteries of time and space and brings it into a perspective I can understand and believe.
