It's an hour away from darkness, a bitter winter storm is raging, and Joe Pickett is deep in the forest edging Battle Mountain, shotgun in his left hand, his truck's detached steering wheel handcuffed to his right--and Lamar Gardiner's arrow-riddled corpse splayed against the tree in front of him. Lamar's murder and the sudden onslaught of the snowstorm warn: Get off the mountain. But Joe knows this episode is far from over. And when his own daughter gets caught up in his hunt for the killer, Joe will stop at nothing to get her back...

Children are Often Victims of Circumstance

This is one of Box's greatest books. I have read several and highly recommend this one. CJ Box has an accurate take on the Feds and how they try to run shod over state and local governments. No wonder people feel the way they do about the federal government.

  • Winterkill is a fun read.

Winterkill is wonderful. Like all CJ box novels, the plot moves at breakneck speed with lots of twists and turns. There's no verbose navel-gazing for Joe Pickett. He paints his scenes, sets his moods and develops his characters very well without a lot of wasted words. I have a mental picture of all his friends, enemies and family.

  • Excellent modern outdoor western. Very strong characters. Engrossing stories.

I am a big fan of C J Box's series about Wyoming game warden, Joe Pickett. I bought this book and 3 others for my brother and his wife, who live in Colorado and both love the series.

  • Trouble Follows Joe Pickett, Again

C J Box continues to make Game Warden Pickett an interesting character who finds trouble around every turn. Once you start the series, you will not stop until you have read every box in the series.
