About this product

Product Information

In his most extraordinary book, "one of the great clinical writers of the 20th century"(The New York Times)recounts the case histories of patients lost in the bizarre, apparently inescapable world of neurological disorders. Oliver Sacks'sThe Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hattells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts; who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects; who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities; whose limbs have become alien; who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents. If inconceivably strange, these brilliant tales remain, in Dr. Sacks's splendid and sympathetic telling, deeply human. They are studies of life struggling against incredible adversity, and they enable us to enter the world of the neurologically impaired, to imagine with our hearts what it must be to live and feel as they do. A great healer, Sacks never loses sight of medicine's ultimate responsibility: "the suffering, afflicted, fighting human subject."

Humane depictions of unusual patient experiences.

The author and this book are well known, but it is always worth revisiting these extraordinary human experiences. I reread the piece about the artist with autism. Sacks finds such delight in his interactions with the fellow, and in making his warmly discerning observations about the artist's gift - and how that artist's subjects are brought to vibrant life because of his very particular genius. Sacks enlightens the reader, by way of his astute understanding or interpretation of his patients' experiences, with a warm and bright narrative voice. Highly recommended.

  • WONDERFUL TITLE!!! EXCELLENT! SUCCINT!

This book is AMAZING! Oliver Sacks, is indeed, such a wonderful man in this world of "not so wonderful people"! His astounding and determined mind, his ability to think whilst right on the job is truly a gift! He treats his "patients" as a WHOLE PERSON, not just a "symptom" ~ it's the whole person he sees. His writing, and Case Studies are quite remarkable. This world could do with many more Oliver Sacks in it! His writing is very readable, so much so, that since reading "Musicophilia" I simply HAD to read this particular one, and now I'm totally "hooked". He is indeed a man of great compassion, humour, understanding, and empathy. He would be a "God send" for his patients, and they most likely did see him as their "saviour" in the world in which they simply "exist". He is a ...

  • I highly recommend this book. Sacks is a gifted comedic & scientific writer

This is a fantastic book. It is witty, laugh-out-loud funny, and worded mostly in layman's terms, while at the same time being scientifically accurate and relevant. The stories are complex, and truly stranger than fiction, but Oliver Sacks explains their unbelievable neurological origins seamlessly throughout. I have purchased and gifted this book several times. I have finally refused to give up my current copy, thus this was a gift purchase for a friend whom I thought would enjoy the tales and Sack's unique writing style. We are both pleased with not only the content, but the condition of the volume.

  • Successfully treats by remembering they are persons.

Very interesting case histories of neurological/psychiatric related disorders that the public rarely hears of. The Doctor is successful in part because he treats them as if they did not have a disability. Of course he has a keen intellect and is widely read re: his field but he is also intellectually curious and driven by a desire to help others.
