About this product

Product Information

Written over the course of three days and three nights, The Subterraneans was generated out of the same kind of ecstatic flash of inspiration that produced another one of Kerouac's early classics, On The Road . Centering around the tempestuous breakup of Leo Percepied and Mardou Fox--two denizens of the 1950s San Francisco underground-- The Subterraneans is a tale of dark alleys and smoky rooms, of artists, visionaries, and adventurers existing outside mainstream America's field of vision.

Reviews
Praise for Jack Kerouac and The Subterraneans : "Kerouac's work represents the most extensive experiment in language and literary form undertaken by an American writer of his generation."-- Ann Douglas "A book of raw power and awesome beauty."-- San Francisco Examiner "Each book by Kerouac is unique, a telepathic discord. Such rich, natural writing is nonpareil in the later twentieth century."-- Allen Ginsberg "An outsider in America, Jack Kerouac was a true original."--Ann Charters "There is no doubt about [Kerouac's] great sensitivity to language. His sentences frequently move into tempestuous sweeps and whorls and sometimes they have something of the rich music of Gerard Manley Hopkins or Dylan Thomas."-- New York Herald Tribune "The first clear development of the American Romantic prose since Hemingway, Kerouac's writing is full of mad sex, comedy, wide-screen travel writing, and long lyrical evocations of American childhood and adolescent memories."-- Times (UK), "The first clear development of the American Romantic prose since Hemingway, Kerouac's writing is full of mad sex, comedy, widescreen travel writing, and long lyrical evocations of American childhood and adolescent memories."-- The Times (London) "Kerouac's work represents the most extensive experiment in language and literary form undertaken by an American writer of his generation."--Ann Douglas "Each book by Kerouac is unique, a telepathic discord. Such rich, natural writing is nonpareil in the later twentieth century."--Allen Ginsberg "An outsider in America, Jack Kerouac was a true original."--Ann Charters, "The first clear development of the American Romantic prose since Hemingway, Kerouac's writing is full of mad sex, comedy, widescreen travel writing, and long lyrical evocations of American childhood and adolescent memories."— The Times (London) "Kerouac's work represents the most extensive experiment in language and literary form undertaken by an American writer of his generation."—Ann Douglas "Each book by Kerouac is unique, a telepathic discord. • Classic literature full of life, you owe the experience to yourself

I bought this book because I had read three other Kerouac novels, and had an overwhelming need for more, so I purchased The Subterraneans and am glad I did. It's a much more condensed piece of time which fits with the rest of the Kerouac legend well.

  • Thanks!!!

Your description was dead on, and I&am already done with the book. YAY!! Jack Kerouac is an amazing human being. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
