About this product

Product Information

This original and lucid account of the complexities of love and its essential role in human well-being draws on the latest scientific research. Three eminent psychiatrists tackle the difficult task of reconciling what artists and thinkers have known for thousands of years about the human heart with what has only recently been learned about the primitive functions of the human brain. A General Theory of Love demonstrates that our nervous systems are not self-contained: from earliest childhood, our brains actually link with those of the people close to us, in a silent rhythm that alters the very structure of our brains, establishes life-long emotional patterns, and makes us, in large part, who we are. Explaining how relationships function, how parents shape their child's developing self, how psychotherapy really works, and how our society dangerously flouts essential emotional laws, this is a work of rare passion and eloquence that will forever change the way you think about human intimacy.

Reviews
"An insightful look at the science of human emotions. . . . A rare example of the fusing of scientific rigor with literary eloquence." -- San Fransisco Examiner "Bold. . . . Eminently readable. . . . Convincingly connects love and biology." -- The Washington Post Book World "A lovely, furious book. . . . It puts love right where we're not used to finding it--in the company of physics and economics as a suitable object of study. . . . Comparisons to Oliver Sacks and Lewis Thomas become inevitable." -- San Francisco Chronicle "In elegant prose . . . [the authors] argue why we need a culture attuned to the ways of the heart." - Entertainment Weekly, "In elegant prose…[the authors] argue why we need a culture attuned to the ways of the heart." • Science and poetry...

Rarely do I read a book twice, and this is one of those rare books. What makes us human? Why do we have feelings for certain people? Why are we attracted to the same kinds of people? Where do intuition and dreams come from? Why do we need each other not only to survive, but to thrive? Why does my pet dog miss me (and only me) when I'm away? What's the science behind some of these, and many more questions. The book combines science, psyche and poetry. It's an excellent book for a book club or to read with someone else; I find myself wanting to talk to someone after each chapter. I also enjoy learning about the human brain.

  • My niece the know it all

I got the book in one piece so technically all is well. This book was recommended to me by my niece who is currently in college. She said that the book "was great" and that I "had to read it." So I bought it and tried to read it and I think the book is boring, poorly written and not worth the time spent to read it. So I called my niece and called BS on her for suggesting this book. She informed me that she had, in fact Not read the book but thought I might like the subject matter. The moral of the story is please, in the name of all that's good and decent do not suggest books you haven't read to anyone. It's really a scumbag move thinking that you can waste someone's time on a bad read that you yourself couldn't be bothered to read yourself. If you'd like to read this book I'll send it to ...

  • FUN and INTERESTING READ!

This book engages and reads like a novel. It addresses meaningful ideas related to love and how it psychologically and physically works in the mind. I compare this book to Freakonomics, in that it's a fun read that also teaches a lot. Written very well, and with great information! Highly recommend! My course in college only required 5 chapters to be read, but many people end up finishing the whole book!
