About this product

Product Information

Watership Down is the compelling tale of a group of wild rabbits struggling to hold onto their place in the world--now a Emmy Award-winning Netflix animated miniseries starring James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Oscar and Grammy award-winning Sir Ben Kingsley. A phenomenal worldwide bestseller for more than forty years, Richard Adams's Watership Down is a timeless classic and one of the most beloved novels of all time. Set in England's Downs, a once idyllic rural landscape, this stirring tale of adventure, courage and survival follows a band of very special creatures on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, to a mysterious promised land and a more perfect society.

Reviews
"Spellbinding...Marvelous...A Taut Tale of Suspense, Hot Pursuit and Derring-Do." -- Chicago Tribune, "Quite marvelous...A powerful new vision of the great chain of being." -- The New York Times Book Review, What a relief to read of characters who have honor and courage and dignity, who will risk their lives for others, whose love for their families and friends and community is enduring and effective, To capture the feeling of the verdant English landscape in Richard Adams's "Watership Down" (Atheneum, 496 pages, $29.99), first published in 1972, Aldo Galli painted in the real locations described in the story. In his finely wrought illustrations, the rabbits Hazel and Pipkin crouch beside the real Nuthanger Farm and Hazel, Bigwig and Fiver make their way across the real Hampshire downs. Mr. Galli brings a sense of intensified realism to his depictions in this 40th anniversary edition. Foliage is luxuriantly, impossibly green, and the edges of things-the feathers of birds, the fluff of dandelions-look as sharp as if they were cut from glass. As a gift, this edition would suit anyone over the age of 10, including adults.

  • Review from my childhood reading experience.

In 1981 I was 6 years old and read this book. I remember feeling proud of myself because I read a book so big then. Nowadays, it takes me a while to read a book that size as an adult! I hadn't really even thought about it until I was thinking of books I enjoyed as a child when thinking of getting one for my 9 year old girl. This book popped into my head as one of my favorites then. I was surprised to find out that it had become a classic. Not surprised that it was that good... just surprised that I had become that old! I also was surprised to hear reviews of (gasp!) rabbit rape and such violence. When I read it then, I just remember it being an amazing adventure (good times and bad times just like in "real" life) and it really helped me to understand (in my young mind then) that what ...
