About this product

Product Information

An ambitious West Texas schoolmarm (Renee Zellweger) with literary inclinations is drawn romantically to an idiosyncratic writer (Vincent D'Onofrio) of pulp horror tales, despite his virtually Oedipal attachment to his convalescent mother and his other emotional troubles. A tender, offbeat romantic story based on the memoir "One Who Walked Alone," written by Novalyne Price of her brief affair with "Conan the Barbarian" creator Robert E. Howard.

I ordered 12 DVDs from second.sale. Each DVD was supposed to be in "VERY GOOD" condition... they weren't. Each DVD was covered in fingerprints and dust. The covers were in "FAIR" condition at best. I can only hope the discs are in playable condition. It's new DVDs/Blu-ray from now on... I'd rather pay more to know I'm getting discs in good condition.

    Great Movie

Vincent D'Onofrio became Robert Howard in this movie. I've read most of REH's stories, letters, and many of the bio's of him. I don't think anyone will ever know who he really was, he probably only had a handful of true friends, and sadly, his writings were mostly ignored until even they were gone. This may be the closest that anybody will ever come. Its a very good movie even if you dont know who Howard was, and if you're a fan, you need to own it.

  • Excellent Story Of Unrequited Love with REH !

Wow! I thought I knew a lot about Robert E Howard, (REH), but this movie added another facet to his life. The movie is about a Texas school teacher,(Renee Zellweger), who has been dabling with writing while teaching school. Her old boyfriend introduces her to REH, and she is drawn romantically to him. However REH is an idiosyncratic writer, (played by Vincent D'Onofrio), of pulp action / adventure / fantasy /horror tales. Actually he describes himself as the 'greatest pulp writer of all'. However the romance that Novalyn, (the school teacher), wants with REH doesn't go anywere because of REH's Oedipal attachment to his convalescent mother. Add to that problem that REH has some other emotional troubles, such as his attitude towards women, and that he doesn't want to be tied down. Yet ...

  • The Whole Wide World

I bought this movie because I am a fan of the actor, Vincent D'Onofrio. What I didn't expect was such a great and early performance of Renee Zellweger also. They made a great team together; just playing off each other so well. The performances are excellent, the scenery is gorgeous, and the music just beautiful. Also outstanding supporting performances by Harve Presnell and Ann Wedgeworth. This movie came out at the same time as "Titanic". It is far superior without all the special effects. It was also shot in one month on a shoestring budget. Just goes to prove that too much money is spent on blockbusters when the real movies that leave such an impact on your mind and heart can be shot with love, professionalism and a minor budget. Would recommend this movie to all. It is a true story, ...

  • Good movie which led to reading excellent book

I bought this DVD because, after viewing it, I discovered that it was based on a true story as told in the book, One Who Walks Alone. The book is amazing for many reasons, among which the author wrote it when she was 76 years old and it was her first published book. After I read the book, I was so impressed that I bought the DVD, to give as a gift, along with the book, to one of my daughters who also is interested in writing. Sure, the movie isn't 100% faithful to the book, but what movie is. It follows the book well enough. I thought the acting was very well done and complemented the book very well.

  • Interesting Love Story Re: Robert Howard

Interesting and very nice acting about the Fantasy Sword and Sorcery Author Robert E. Howard. My wife didn't know about the ending, which hurt her view of this movie. It was a forgone conclusion, if you are familiar at all with the author. I have read several of his writings and poems. Solomon Kane has always been one of my favorites, a Puritan looking to save the world. The acting was the best reason to see this movie. He was also a star in Full Metal Jacket and he really shines in the CSI series. Fabulous acting. I have never been a real fan of love movies but this was interesting period peace with quality scenes and costume design. Definitely worth the time just as a period piece.
