About this product

Product Information

From the bestselling author ofOperating InstructionsandBird by Birdcomes a chronicle of faith and spirituality that is at once tough, personal, affectionate, wise and very funny. With an exuberant mix of passion, insight, and humor, Anne Lamott takes us on a journey through her often troubled past to illuminate her devout but quirky walk of faith. In a narrative spiced with stories and scripture, with diatribes, laughter, and tears, Lamott tells how, against all odds, she came to believe in God and then, even more miraculously, in herself. She shows us the myriad ways in which this sustains and guides her, shining the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life and exposing surprising pockets of meaning and hope. Whether writing about her family or her dreadlocks, sick children or old friends, the most religious women of her church of the men she's dated, Lamott reveals the hard-won wisdom gathered along her path to connectedness and liberation.

"Anne Lamott is a cause for celebration. [Her] real genius lies in capturing the ineffable, describing not perfect moments, but imperfect ones. . . perfectly. She is nothing short of miraculous." --The New Yorker "[She is] sidesplittingly funny, patiently wise, and alternately cranky and kind."  --Seattle Times "Lamott writes about subjects that begin with capital letters (Alcoholism, Motherhood, Jesus). But armed with self-effacing humor and ruthless honesty--call it a lower-case approach to life's Big Questions--she converts potential op-ed biolerplate into enlightenment." --Newsweek "Smart, funny, comforting. . . Lamott has a conversational style that perfectly conveys her friendly, self-deprecating humor." --Los Angeles Times Book Review "Eloquent, detailed, emotionally honest. . . Lamott deserves praise for telling it like it is."  --People From the Hardcover edition., "Anne Lamott is a cause for celebration. • A Private Journey

Traveling Mercies is a down-to-earth, sometimes gritty account of Anne Lamott's journey toward God. She is remarkably ready to detail, not only the self-destructive bent her life took from childhood on, but also the agonizingly long time she took making each tiny move toward filling the God-shaped hole in her life. I chose to buy the book because of several paragraphs quoted from it in Michael Yaconelli's book, Messy Spirituality. The quote resonated with me. I recommend the book if you are willing to learn from another's journey.

  • Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott

Anne Lamott is a thoroughly wonderful, flawed, thoughtful, honest, beautiful writer. Like the proverbial potato chip trap, you can't read just one. Finishing the book leaves you craving another read....

  • literary perfection

this is absolutely the book that got me hooked on anne lamott more than 8 years ago. i had "lent" it to a friend, and it was never returned! i HAD to have another copy, and low and behold-ebay had it! anne has such an unbelievable way of looking at the world we live in with all its' imperfections, irritations, limitations, beauty and terror. i've since met her and read all her other works~95% of which were fantastic! she's an american treasure and i would recommend her work to any one with an open mind and the ability to laugh at themselves.

  • A thought provoking book.

I enjoyed reading this book for my Bookclub.
