Synopsis
Eleanor Estes's The Hundred Dresses won a Newbery Honor in 1945 and has never been out of print since. At the heart of the story is Wanda Petronski, a Polish girl in a Connecticut school who is ridiculed by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress every day. Wanda claims she has one hundred dresses at home, but everyone knows she doesn't and bullies her mercilessly. The class feels terrible when Wanda is pulled out of the school, but by that time it's too late for apologies. Maddie, one of Wanda's classmates, ultimately decides that she is "never going to stand by and say nothing again." This powerful, timeless story has been reissued with a new letter from the author's daughter Helena Estes, and with the Caldecott artist Louis Slobodkin's original artwork in beautifully restored color., This Newbery Honor classic, illustrated by a Caldecott Medalist, is a beautifully written tribute to the power of kindness, acceptance, and standing up for what's right. Wanda Petronski is ridiculed by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress every day. She claims she has one hundred dresses at home, but everyone knows she doesn't. When Wanda is pulled out of school one day, the class feels terrible, and classmate Maddie decides that she is "never going to stand by and say nothing again." A timeless, gentle tale about bullies, bystanders, and having the courage to speak up., This Newbery Honor classic, illustrated by a Caldecott Medalist, is a beautifully written tribute to the power of kindness, acceptance, and standing up for what's right.

The book I needed arrived, but I would have not rated it as in "good" condition. It has significant water damage/staining making the pages wavy and leaving water marks. The book is still functional and legible, but I was hoping it would be in better condition. Shipping speed was fine and the other books were good too.

Excellent story of bullying and courage

This book was a Newbery honor book in 1943. Third grade reading level, 3rd-5th grade interest level. The content is still very relative today - would make an excellent read-aloudE. The theme is bullying. Several girls bully another girl. Fortunately, one girl (the narrator) has second thoughts and tries to make amends.

  • Good title for this lovely story.

This is a classic book. It was written in the 50's but the theme of popularity, being "different' than the majority, teasing and regret are still current today. Nice read aloud book for 3-5 graders.

  • Happy Reading

I bought this book for my 13 year old daughter that I homeschool....We have just begun reading it together so I am hoping we can both enjoy it! I has great reviews so I thought I would check it out and see how she likes it and be able to pass it on to my other friends with kids so that they can enjoy it as well.
