As an English Education minor, we read this book in my University Grammar class and I absolutely fell in love with it. I'm a pretty big etymology nerd, so anything that documents the history of our language and the idiosyncrasies (as well as the remarkable similarities) between various regions appeals to me greatly. What makes this book so enjoyable (even to those who aren't word nerds) is Bryson's clever, conversational style of writing. He is an absolutely outstanding author and his wit and personality are able to draw in even the most reluctant of readers. The information Bryson presents is incredibly interesting and framed so enjoyably that it was easy to forget it was assigned reading! After graduating, I ended up giving my copy away as well as purchasing numerous copies as gifts for ... Every page supplies surprising information that weaves together as an enthusiast's account of how English became what it is now and the varieties of ways it serves different cultures and regions. I carry it to doctor's appointments and anywhere I may be stuck for a while.
