Synopsis
Learning the Tarot is a complete course on how to use the tarot cards for personal guidance. The 19 lessons in the course cover the basics and then move gradually into more advanced concepts. Exercises and sample responses for each lesson help you learn and practice. For simplicity, only one easy layout is used throughout the course the Celtic Cross Spread. Learning the Tarot focuses in detail on the actual process of discovering meaning in the cards. Lessons cover topics such as how to consider one card by itself, how to look for card pairs, and how to create the "story" of a reading. A convenient reference section contains two pages of information for each card including a picture from the popular Waite deck, a description, keywords, action phrases and suggestions for cards with similar and opposite meanings., Learning the Tarot , Joan Bunning offers a complete course in 19 lessons that covers the basics and then gradually goes into more advanced concepts. First published in 1998, Joan Bunning's Learning the Tarot has become a tarot classic. Written in a confident and natural style, the book communicates the basic depth and beauty of each card, shows how the cards trigger psychological projection, and enhances intuition. Learning the Tarot is a thorough (but never overwhelming) invitation to the beginner. The book focuses in detail on: the actual process of discovering meaning in the cards how to consider one card by itself, how to look for card pairs how to create the "story" of a reading The book includes a convenient reference section that contains two pages of information for each card, including a picture from the popular Waite-Smith deck, a description, keywords, action phrases, and suggestions for cards with similar and opposite meanings. The author first presented this course online at learntarot.com , which continues to attract over one hundred thousand visitors per month. "When I first created my website in 1995," writes Joan Bunning, "I never dreamed how much interest in the tarot I would find. People from all over the world began writing to tell me about their experiences with the course and their adventures with the cards. This response was music to my ears! I knew from my own experience that the tarot is a wonderful tool for personal guidance and inner exploration. "My goal with this book was to give you the basics you need to begin working with the tarot on your own. I try to make this inner process understandable by breaking it up into a series of steps that are simple while still doing justice to the depth and beauty of the cards. I concentrate on the everyday, showing how the tarot makes real, practical sense in the modern world. The tarot is a living system that adapts creatively to each user. Rather than rules, I offer guidelines. While reading my book, I want you to feel that you have a teacher sitting next to you who is introducing you to this special tool, but also encouraging you to go on to discover your own unique approach to the cards."

      Excellent for beginners!

This is a great book for beginners who want to know the tarot's history and how to use the cards in more depth. Most cards come with a small book with the basic card meanings but this goes much further into it and how to use the tarot to apply to your own life. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to really learn the tarot!

A good guide for advanced readers

As a beginner I found a lot of opposite meanings about the same card which was confusing . I understand your supposed to interpret your impression of the cards and tell your own story ... but if you wanted the intended meaning this book always has two opposing answers . Like I wrote as a beginner I found it to be frustrating . Maybe as I improve I will understand why it's written this way

    • Learning the Tarot THE beginner book

Anyone who is interested in the Tarot can't go wrong with purchasing this book. It's easy to use and has exercises if your interested in doing some. The strength of this book is how it is setup. I love that each card has it's own page, and there is room on that page to add your own notes. The keywords are a great way to get yourself started. Joan Bunning takes an in depth look at the Celtic Cross (CC) and I find that helpful as well. Many people feel the CC shouldn't be in a beginner book, however it's the spread that most people have heard of so they want to know how to do one. This book gives you a great place to start. There are also a few really nice three card spreads. This is my 1st suggestions for someone interested in learning Tarot.

    • One of the best

Bunning's book is one of the best out there for new Tarot enthusiasts. She gives clear information as well as steps on how to learn. Obviously she's been teaching this system for a number of years. I use ideas from this book for my own Tarot classes and workshops. This is a name you will find on every serious Tarot reader's bookshelf. It is safe to say that your collection isn't safe without Bunning's book. If I had to name the top three beginner Tarot books, I would put this one there without hesitation. Bunning has also written a reversals books that is good. If you want to learn Tarot from a book, learn from one of the best, Joan Bunning.

    • THE BEST! Extremely informative ..

Wow Such a great read for beginners but seems just as informative for pros. I highly recommend this book if want to learn the ropes of reading tarot cards. I have always been interested in the art of reading cards but only recently have I pursued this. I bought a couple Tarot learning books for beginners but Learning the Tarot by Joan Bunning was the absolute easiest to understand & quickest way to learn. There is such detail on what you would need to know on how to interpret your cards & she helps with the card spreads and where tarot began and what things tarot may help give you incite to. There is just so many things and so much information in this book unlike others of its kind. You gain so much from this one book.
