Synopsis
Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, the USA Today and #1 Amazon Charts bestseller Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man's incredible courage and resilience during one of history's darkest hours. Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager--obsessed with music, food, and girls--but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier--a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler's left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich's most mysterious and powerful commanders. Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share. Fans of All the Light We Cannot See , The Nightingale , and Unbroken will enjoy this riveting saga of history, suspense, and love., Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, the USA Today and #1 Amazon Charts bestseller Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man's incredible courage and resilience during one of history's darkest hours. Amazing story mediocre writing

Loved the story and learning about Pino but did not find the writing style particularly enjoyable, it seemed a bit juvenile. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the investigation piece and putting the puzzle together just didn't care for the writing style. I would have loved to be the author on that journey to meet such an amazing man who has seen more in one lifetime than 100 other.

An astonish–ly bad book! Book needs to Bradburied!

This book is a Hallmark movie in words. He lost me at "Preface." It's billed as a "based on a true story...of an unsung hero." If so, then why is it being sold as "fictionalized non-fiction" whatever that is. In other words, the author would have us believe it's a true narrative, just not one that may be subject to scrutiny and verification by proper/professional historians. If it's true, it should have been a biography, not "historical fiction." And even so, read as a fictional novel, it's still a bloody awful–cliche-ridden, trite, anachronistic 500 pager that at best should have been half as long. Go see a Hallmark movie if this is you thing.

  • Milan 1944

This is a book I could not put down. 17 year old boy’s fight against the Germans in most unusual ways. After reading a library copy, I bought this paperback to pass around to my neighbor, son, daughter, etc. it will pique everyone’s interest - unless they are romance reader. I highly recommended it.

  • Great story.

Wonderfully written and an almost unbelievable few years of Pino Lella’s life. This is an account of not only Italy’s story of World War II but also one of Italian Jews which so little has been written.

  • Compelling read

I read a lot of books and I loved this story. Pino Lela was a boy forced to do adult mens work. Namely try to save the lives of those being persecuted by the Nazi's. A friend from work recommended the book. I read part of the first chapter and then she told me her connection to Mr Lela, she was his daughter-in-law. She offered me her book but I purchased my own copy. After I finished the book I put the book into circulation. I was in the Navy and Law Enforcement and find stories of extreme bravery and personal sacrifice the best reads. I salute Pino Lela and his sacrifice for the good of mankind.
