Un anciano periodista decide celebrar su cumpleaños número noventa y pasar una noche con una muchacha virgen. Así conoce a una joven de catorce años en el burdel que él solía frecuentar y a la que bautiza como Delgadina. Surge de esta cita un sentimiento oculto en él, y por primera vez en su vida siente el amor. Una gran ternura nace de esta relación la que se ve materializada en la dedicación que el anciano pone en las lecturas que le hace a Delgadina mientras duerme. El hombre nos va relatando los sentimientos que le abordan y la nueva perspectiva que tiene ahora de la existencia. Se cuestiona sus experiencias pasadas y se replantea la vida al estar enamorado, pero también se da cuenta que a su edad es difícil que esa relación alejada por la diferencia de edad se cumpla cabalmente, lo que le provoca sentimientos de desesperanza.
