"American Girls Collection" is great all around...
.... but Addy is my favorite. These were important stories to me as a young girl, and 15 years later they hold their own (if not gaining in value). In "Addy's Surprise," a newly freed 9-year-old former slave is learning that Freedom has it's cost in 1864 Philadelphia. She and her mother are desperately trying to find other members of the family that they were separated from on the plantation, and Addy is losing hope that they will be together in time for Christmas.... but a surprise reminds Addy what the season is all about!! I'd recommend the American Girls Collection books because they are historically accurate and teach values and life lessons without seeming "preachy." Each historical American Girl is growing up during a dramatic change in America's time line between 1764 and ... .... but Addy is my favorite. There is a short section at the back of each book called "Looking Back," where subjects from child labor laws and the Declaration of Independence to immigration, suffrage, and slavery are explained in delicate, unbiased, and easy ways for a child to understand. I myself always remembered the date the Emancipation Proclamation was signed because it was Addy's birthday in the books. It seems these books are aimed at children aged seven to thirteen as far as reading capability. I have not read all of the girl's stories; I've specifically read about Felicity, Kirsten, Addy, Samantha, and Molly, but the newer additions are on my list. I lean towards the first edition books personally because the artwork has changed with re-printing, and part of the value is nostalgic for me. I don't think I've read or seen anything that compares modern everyday struggles a pre-teen could be facing to a lesson they could learn in school. A+, definitely. (And a good refresher course for all ages!!) PICK UP THIS BOOK! :)

Addy's Surprise
My 8 yr. old granddaughter can't put these books down. She will sneak a flashlight to bed just to keep reading. The great thing about them is they are historically correct. She has learned so much about what it was like for Addy, who is Africian American, and her family during the time of slavery. She had never heard of this much before. It is quite the eye opener for her.
