About this product

Product Information

A richly imagined novel of the Old West, as spare and vivid as a high plains sunset, from one of the world's most talented performers. It was a long time ago, now, and there were many gunfights to follow, but I remember as well as I remember anything the first time I saw Virgil Cole shoot. Time slowed down for him. Always steady, and never fast . . . When it comes to writing, Robert B. Parker knows no boundaries. From the iconic Spenser detective series and the novels featuring Sunny Randall and Jesse Stone, to the groundbreaking historical novelDouble Play, Parker's imagination has taken readers from Boston to Brooklyn and back again. InAppaloosa, fans are taken on another trip, to the untamed territories of the West during the 1800s. When Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch arrive in Appaloosa, they find a small, dusty town suffering at the hands of renegade rancher Randall Bragg, a man who has so little regard for the law that he has taken supplies, horses, and women for his own and left the city marshal and one of his deputies for dead. Cole and Hitch, itinerant lawmen, are used to cleaning up after opportunistic thieves, but in Bragg they find an unusually wily adversary-one who raises the stakes by playing not with the rules, but with emotions. This is Robert B. Parker at his storytelling best.

  • Horse of a different color

Appaloosa is a fabulous story by a brilliant author. Robert Parker slips out from Spenser mysteries to westerns in a seemingly simple way. The details are right from history. The story is fun to follow and makes you wish there were a dozen more of these to read. The book and the movie follow each other well and there are no disappointments. It’s a brilliant single day read that you can recommend to your son or grandmother.

  • Appaloosa

A realistic, gritty western story of two professional lawmen who contract to bring the law back to the town of Appaloosa after their predecessor's murder. The straightforward and symbiotic friendship between Cole and Hitch is complicated when a single woman arrives in town. The interaction between Cole and Hitch is a profoundly entertaining character study. The story details are historically accurate as to what daily life was like in the post civil war west. Actor, Ed Harris, read this book on a vacation & made it into the film, Appaloosa, which stays true to the book's storyline - no need to change a great thing. This story has much more depth than the usual western saga. I went on to read Parker's sequel to Appaloosa, Resolution, which I enjoyed even more. I can't wait to read the ...

  • As Good As The Movie!

I read Robert Parker's book first, really, and I enjoyed the story. This is a different sort of western, but fun nonetheless. Parker's work is evident on TV most recently featuring Tom Selleck as a Maine cop. This story reads like a script and it is a fast read, especially after reading the Tolkien LOTR cycle. The movie with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen is purty good, the characters are quirky and likeable - most of the time - the their relationship is the real tresure of the book and film. The 'widow woman' who comes to town adds an element of conflict which any good story needs. And any western novel that gets made into a movie these days is high on my list. Only a few plot items were modified to make the film, and after seeing it I'm not sure why those minor changes really mattered. So ...

  • Not your usual western, but what would you expect from RB Parker! Loved it!

More fun with Robert B. Parker. This new genre (Appaloosa and Resolution) were a different kind of cowboy read, and I loved every second of reading them. Great characters, rounded out in his usual no nonsense form.. and of them full of charm.
