About this product

Product Information

Based on the novel by A.E.W. Mason, this movie adaptation is the third of its kind, following 1939 and 1977 versions. It is the story of a British commander, Harry (Heath Ledger), who follows in his father's footsteps by joining the army. He is engaged to marry the woman of his dreams, Ethne (Kate Hudson), whose father was also a soldier. But when his regiment is to be sent to war in the Sudan, Harry gets nervous. On a whim, he resigns his post, and is instantly rebuffed by three of his closest friends. They each give him a feather symbolic of his fear. When he tells Ethne what he has done, she gives him the fourth, explaining that she cannot love a coward. Lost and alone, Harry cannot come to grips with what has happened. So he travels alone to the Sudan, hoping to in some way help his fellow countrymen and redeem his honor. What he finds instead is a land rife with slavery, brutal violence, and a deadly desert climate. He is befriended by Abou (Djimon Hounsou), a Sudanese wanderer, who saves Harry's life time after time. Director Shekhar Kapur (ELIZABETH) makes this moving adventure story utterly believable with striking photography by Robert Richardson and unmatchable performances from Ledger and Hounsou.

  • long and dull

I bought this DVD because I belong to a book/movie club and the book of the month was the Victorian novel, The Four Feathers. The novel has been made into a movie some six or seven times, and the consensus was that we watch the most recent film, the one starring Heath Ledger. An unfortunate choice. The best known interpretation remains the film by Alexander Korda. Made in the early days of technicolor, the Korda version had the pace and sweep of a true epoch, the trademark of that great director. This latest film is waaay too long, and only bears a vague resemblance to the book. Unlike the Korda version, the plot wanders, the director has no clue as to the nature of English arisocracy, and much of the action borrows heavily from better films. Sadly, it reminds me of the famous line from ...

  • Contrition begets Redemption

There are things worse than death to fear. As one young man comes to grips with his own perceived cowardice and loss he finds himself forever challenging death to honor those he believes he failed. In what is an extraordinary and believable stream of events that would go beyond one imagination this story depics endurance and transformation. Your definition of hero could be altered by the conclusion of this film. One of Heath Ledger's most serious of roles. Perhaps the first to grip me and hold me hostage and make me believe the serious capacity of this now deceased actors' ability and depth.

  • The Four Feathers

While I find the ending lines just a little weak for my taste, I so enjoy the rest of the movie, with its very good cinematography, intense emotions and the enchanting portrayal by Djimon Hounsou of a man with a very special set of values, I feel this more than makes up for the ending. This movie is a much better revelation of Heath Ledger's acting capabilities than the much-acclaimed "Brokeback Mountain." He shows a wide range of emotions and is so totally believable in this outrageously unlikely situation, that he makes it seem as though someone could actually manage to survive all the harrowing experiences his character exposes himself to in this movie. Wes Bentley, as Jack, is also a thoroughly likeable character. It touches my heart every time I hear his avowal of ...
