"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is one of my favorite movies ever. I have loved this movie ever since I was a little girl. It was the first time I had ever seen Sarah Jessica Parker in a movie and I just loved her energy and enthusiasm for life. I especially loved that you could tell how she was so passionate about becoming a dancer! True passion shows. When she made her dreams come true, I just wanted to stand up and cheer. After seeing the movie, I used to sit in my room and dream of moving to Los Angeles,CA to become a model as well as bask in the sunshine. My dream came true when I decided to make that move! Now I'm living my dream in Los Angeles, CA as a model doing exactly what I love. I love how movies can truly move something in you and really allow you to dream big and believe in yourself until your dreams come true. I also loved the friendship between both Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt. Excellent movie. Every single time I watch "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," I can hardly sit still. It makes me actually dance as well as reminds that dreams really can come true when you have a vision, take action, believe in yourself, and surround yourself with positive people. Anything is possible! :-)Read full review
1985. Madonna ruled the world with "Like A Virgin" & "Crazy For You". Michael J. Fox charmed us in "Back To The Future" and we all fell in love with "The Goonies". 3 years earlier we met Sarah Jessica Parker on the short lived series "Square Pegs". Prettier and sexier here- SJP wrapped us around her finger in "G.J.W.H.F.". Janie is your typical teenager. Full of awkwardness & wanting to experience life outside her comfortable family home life. This movie is not by any means meant for the Oscars or any high end award show for that matter. It was not intended for that audience. It was meant for 12 - 17 yrs olds in 1985. Fun, silly, Mtv style look & feel, hot girls and one very, VERY sexy & sweaty guy!! This is a popcorn movie if there ever was one. Sit back and get lost in the silliness. No deep thinking required. Sarah is quite a dancer in her own right and in this gem she is top notch. Though a dancer double may have been used in some scenes. Still- you don't care!! It's all fun! Helen Hunt was actually cute and enjoyable in this film. This was when she was tolerable and before she became a rigid and UN-FUNNY sitcom character and and a VERY undeserving Oscar winner. I can barely say that without feeling ill. But I digress. A very cute and charming character is played by former teen idol Shannen Doherty. She is the younger sister of Jeff (Lee Montgomery) who falls for Janie (SJP). Shannen is like a sundae on a hot summer day. Sweet, cool and makes you happy you showed up!! It's pretty cool to see SJP, Helen & Shannen together in this movie and then think of where they are were headed in a few short years. Amazing! And this film has all 3!! Now, let's talk about Jeff. Sexy, adorable, moody, sweaty Jeff. Total eye candy folks. Yes, he can act and he would have been good with the right sitcom but alas his career ended not long after this film. By his choice if the stories on the net are true. Anyway- Jeff & Janie are pure magic together. The all american boy & girl next door couple. The chemsitry between Lee & SJP is clear and they were the perfect casting choices. You root for them from the beginning. Other characters that round out this film are Janie's military minded father, typical suburban mother, bratty yet cute little brother, Jeff's factory working father, the bitchy spoiled rich girl who tries everything she can to stop Jeff & Janie's success (she barely act though!!) and the money driven-goofy best friend of Jeff played by a young Jonathan Silverman. Jonathan became quite the fetching leading sitcom man in the 90's on "Friends" and his own series- "The Single Guy". If you are looking for an hour and half of fluff, silliness and great 80's fun- then look no further!! I was obessed with this movie growing up. Tried so hard to emulate the dancing. Wanted Jeff to come and be my dance parter!! Truly this film is just fun. A musical highlight is the song "Dancing In Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop)" by Q-Feel. The soundtrack has become a real rarity and sells for quite high prices on ebay last I saw. Let Sarah Jessica, Shannen, Lee, Jonathan & even Helen take you away for some FUN!!Read full review
Good movie. Not Great. If you want to go back to the eighties era this is a good flick. It features Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt when they were very young and they try out for a dance competition without permission. Sarah Jessica ends up getting the part and the guy. Not much else to say about it. I bought it because my sister loves Sarah Jessica Parker and she wanted to see some of her earlier works.
A film every young girl/woman should see. Fun and entertaining. Thank you!

I, myself, am a child of the 80s and with so many movies and television shows being converted to DVD, I'm sharing those memories with my children. My daughter was absolutely enchanted upon first viewing. The music, the dancing, the fashion; she watched it again the very next day. Of course, it's not the most stimulating plot ever, but for a young person (or one who is young at heart, this movies got it all. She also thoroughly enjoyed Footloose (sort of in the same vein).
