Great band for Sabbath fans
OK, this is one of my favorite bands of all time, right up there with Zeppelin, Sabbath, Hendrix, Alice in Chains and Jane's Addiction. Why? Brilliant songwriting and astounding musicianship. Their singer's voice is an acquired taste that I have come to appreciate -- sort of a screechy version of Plant, but if you like heavy, HEAVY Sabbath-esque guitars, you will love Trouble. I've actually had this album for years and am just buying it as a Christmas gift for a freind to round out his collection of their other stuff. Of the band's 7 albums, this is actually their least popular and is hard to get into at first, but it still kicks ___ over any other metal band out there. Want a taste of it? Go to Youtube and type in Trouble run to the light. Who's that playing drums ... Go to Youtube and type in Trouble run to the light. Who's that playing drums at the end of the song? Yep, that's right, Bill Ward from Black Sabbath. Rumor has it that back in the 90s, the guys from Metallica were in the audience at a Trouble show and went up onstage after the performance to scrutinize the amp settings and try to figure out how they were getting such a heavy sound. Do yourself a favor, though: don't buy this CD as your first experience with Trouble. Find a copy of "Manic Frustration" on EBay and if it's less than $40, snap it up as fast as you can (you can find clips of songs like "Memory's Garden" off that album on Youtube too). It is out of print, and Rick Rubin, who produced it, won't give the band the rights to re-release it, but it is absolutely amazing -- heaviest, hardest, baddest sounding guitars you'll ever hear that still sound musical. Next, do the same with "Trouble," the band's previous album, also produced by Rubin, also out of print, also a bargain at $40. OK, now you're hearing the Sabbath sound, right? Now's the time to get adventurous head out to a music store and buy their first two albums -- "The Tempter" and "The Skull". Recently remastered and re-released, these are the band's least accessible albums -- odd song structures, strange chord progressions and tempo changes, and the singer's voice is really hard to get past, but once you do after a couple listens, oh man, those guitars are just stunning -- deep, dark, ultra-heavy Sabbath tone that rivals Iommi. They've become some of my favorite albums by the band. The best description I ever heard of Trouble is "hippie stoner doom metal" and these albums really epitomize that. The singer clearly had a bad experience with religion, as all the lyrics are sort of blious, sarcastic sneering at God and Christianity. OK, are you still in? Now go to newtrouble.com and get the band's live recordings (except "Live in LA" which features their new singer whose voice is even harder to get into). The live stuff is not tinny or overwhelmed by crowd noise, and you still get those awesome guitars. Now's finally the time to get "Run to the Light," "Plastic Green Head" and "Simple Mind Condition." These albums are all decent and as I said better than most metal out there, but they certainly don't showcase the band's brilliance like their first two and the two that Rubin produced. These guys have been SO underrated over the years: with the exception of a little success in the early 90's with "Memory's Garden," they've had just sort of a cult following among musicians, Sabbath freaks and Evangelicals who don't get sarcasm. Awesome band -- I highly recommend them, and well worth the money to get their entire catalog.
