That's because of Ice Tech, a shared technology on both models. The difference between the two lies in a slightly lighter XTR spider that's reserved for gram-obsessed racers. In reality, most of us aren't going to feel the benefits of a few grams lost when they're so centrally located to the hub. However, what we are going to profit from is the three-piece Ice Tech Rotor. It is essentially two pieces of steel optimized for friction sandwiched over an aluminum core. This means Shimano is utilizing the high thermal conductivity of aluminum, where other manufacturers solely use steel throughout the braking surface.

Avid bike riders know how braking effects can fade on a long descent. Overheating of brake pads can cause damage to the brakes, a swelling of the material in places causing inconsistent contact, and change at the molecular level of the pad material causing “chatter.” A braking rotor is available to combat the effects of heat in brakes. The SM-RT86 rotor employs an aluminum core that effectively transfers heat buildup away from the brakes. This product sucks...heat away!
I have been impressed with the heat dissipation of these rotors. They last me about 2 years before wearing through to the aluminum core.
