    The Cream of the Crop

    As a huge fan of David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Bridge on the River Kwai" I thought that was all there was to his work in the modern era. But when I went looking for information on the 1970's Eric Carmen song "All By Myself", the Wikipedia entry mentions that the melody is from the same Rachmaninoff concerto as the old black-and-white film "Brief Encounter" uses as its love theme. Curious, I went looking into this film and found it was directed by none other than David Lean and, digging still more, I found that he had this whole body of black-and-white films form the World War II era I'd never heard of before. So I found "Blithe Spirit" at my local library and this led into "Brief Encounter" and, well, you get the idea. To make a long story short, these films are not only ...
