Oscar-« winner Joan Crawford (Best Actress, 1945, Mildred Pierce) plays Harriet Craig, a sophisticated yet dictatorial woman who runs her household with an iron fist, driving her staff to distraction and treating her husband, Walter (Wendell Corey, Rear Window), like an object, and her cousin, Clare (K.T. Stevens, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice), like a slave.

...Harriet Craig. I thought I'd like this movie based on the tagline which said something about her caring more about the house than anything else, but when I saw what a lying. conniving, manipulative shrew she was, I fell in love with this movie. It's one of Crawford's best performances. Based on a novel and play called "Craig's Wife", it's a story of a highly neurotic woman who marries an easy-going laid back guy named Walter (Wendell Corey) - can you see this isn't exactly a marriage made in Heaven? She is so possessive she'll make up any kind of lie she can in order to snag things to go her way - a perfect family who's always there in a perfect house, with perfect housekeepers who never leave the premises. To paraphrase one of the funniest, strangest lines in the movie, as Harriet finds out a housekeeper is out doing the marketing without her permission, she hurries right back home herself to take care of business. "I will not have my servants running wild in the streets" - or something to that effect. In her mind's eye, friendships and relationships are ill-advised and they are a distraction to the sanctity of "our home". In other words, "we don't need other people around for us to be happy", she lectures her husband when he wants to invite a few friends over for an evening. "We have to be careful with whom we associate". He takes so much crap from her, you tend to forget she's his wife, and this is taking place in the house he grew up in, for God's sake. The reasons why she's such a nut-job do come out in the end, and they're understandable, and somewhat relatable. This is a very well-shot and well-lit movie, as well as wonderfully written. You find yourself restrained and feeling a bit suffocated during any scene set in the house. Even when Harriet's not in a particular scene, you still feel downright paranoid because you know she'll be back, that is if she's not been secretly monitoring and plotting against you all the while. It would sort of remind someone of having a job with an irascible co-worker who makes your life impossible to bear - paycheck or no paycheck. Just buy this movie. If you don't like it, you're only out a few bucks, and you can flip it back on ebay, because someone around the corner is just drooling for the chance to see this rarely broadcast film.
