Straight out of the comics, Peter Parker’s Spider-Man must save the world in the video game "Spider-Man: Web of Shadows" (Nintendo Wii, 2008). Spider-Man is given an updated fighting style in this overhauled version of the game, and is able to do things that he has never done before. This “T-rated” (suggested for teen and above) game is full of new web-slinging action and adventure. The storyline of the game follows Spider-Man after he has been bitten by a spider at OSCORP. The spider venom supplies Spider-Man with ultimate spider powers that he can use to destroy his enemies in the game. Evil enters the game in the form of a “symboite,” an evil alien that changes Spider-Man into a dark character. The player must choose how best to deal with the city-wide infection of the symboites. Both good and evil characters in the game may become infected, and the player must choose the correct solution to each problem. The player in this video game has the choice of good and evil paths and characters. Depending on each choice, the outcome of the game is changed. The player can choose the hero Spider-Man in the familiar red and blue suit, or the villain Spider-Man in a black suit. The player is able to change between the two at will. Each version of Spider-Man, red and blue or black, has a different set of abilities. The red and blue Spider-Man is agile and fast; the black Spiderman is strong and destructive. As the player moves through the game, upgrades and cheats are available that allow special combat moves or access to new areas of the city. The game’s environment is open-ended and free roaming. Players decide how to move through the game’s levels and which acrobatic moves best fit the situations at hand. The Nintendo Wii consoles and controllers assist the player in making the most of the new and different combat routines available to the Spider-Man character. Combat moves must be mastered as Spider-Man moves from the street level up the sides of buildings and onto the rooftop level. The Wii version of the game provides the player with exclusive Spider-Man suits not available on other platforms. In the Wii version of "Web of Shadows," the video game’s 2D overhead view is replaced with a 3D view. The game’s new 3D-looking map provides the position of the player along an X, Y, and Z axis. Multiple levels are available to the player in this version of the game. Often, cheats assist the player in obtaining a special action move or location not available otherwise. Cheats are available online or from other players. The Wii platform of the game also allows the player to choose which villain to fight. The game includes a number of different villain selections, such as Venom. The player can also choose allies for Spider-Man, such as Black Cat or Wolverine. With all of the new action and adventure available on the Wii platform, players will be challenged for hours on end.
