    Incredible Sound

    I own a number of exceptional listening devices. One is a 30 year old pair of the original ER4s that have served me well. I read some good reviews for these ER4XRs and wanted something different for mixing down some drum files. I wasn't that impressed when I first put them in but, I know how the cone seals work and installed the larger ones and the music came so alive I was stunned. Everything literally came alive - the drums, keyboards, guitars, voices, the huge audience on this particular YouTube video I checked out. Everything I listen to is crystal clear, which Etymotic is known for but, that slight touch of extra low end frequency makes a really impressive difference. Man, these puppies are unbelievable.

It's good, but at the price it seems like they "should" do better. Reason for buying despite high cost and poor bass: excellent isolation from outside sounds, I don't know of anything else close. Reason you might not want to buy: Etymotic used to offer repairs, but no longer either repair or replacement parts, so if it breaks you are out a lot of money.

    Great for neutral, detailed sound

    Very detailed and neutral, XR version adds a slight base boost, but these are far from bass heavy. These will likely reveal details in your music you've never heard before. These do require inserting deeper in your ear than most IEMs for a good seal & best sound, which I find perfectly comfortable but others may not.
