Well-written and illustrated atlas of a complex region
Having read several other books by Sir Martin Gilbert, a jew (who is official biographer of Sir Winston Churchill), including Israel, A History; The Holocaust: A History of the Jews of Europe During the Second World War; The Second World War: A Complete History; The First World War: A Complete History; and having seen a video, Jerusalem, produced and narrated by Gilbert, I was surprised to learn that he had also produced (as consulting editor) this Atlas of Jewish Civilization. I have many other bible atlases, the best of which is published by Zondervan. In Gilbert's atlas, the proportion of space dedicated to maps versus text is approximately the same. Whereas the Zondervan atlas ends with the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD, Gilbert's atlas is special in that it covers the ... Whereas the Zondervan atlas ends with the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD, Gilbert's atlas is special in that it covers the history of the diaspora following the Second Temple period and covers the many boundaries of various territories throughout "the Levant" -- all the way to the point of its publication, 1990. Now that is a complex story to tell. It closely parallels Israel: A History, which begins in the 1860s and the first Zionist Conference in 1898. I believe it gives inadequate space to the Old Testament period -- the first 1,800 years of Jewish history (i.e., the first half), and a disproportionate amount of space to the "second half" of Jewish history. Gilbert's atlas is an overview of the Jewish Civilization and helps readers understand very well why the territory is so bloody. Gilbert's treatment of the twentieth century is outstanding. His atlas is not written for students looking to cross-reference Torah or Old Testament or New Testament place names but more for the reader who wants to have a broad understanding of how and why Israel's borders today were established. I can highly recommend it to any reader, however. Its binding is sewn and it lies flat; different from cheap atlases with glue binding only, this atlas is made to last.
