One of the greatest lenses of all time. This legendary lens is super-sharp, fast-focusing and hand-holdable, particularly with VR. It is an indispensable focal length for on-site portraits, landscapes, sports and action. Given its relative age, it is a great value on eBay, at about half off its original already reasonable price. Combined with a TC14E-III, it is also flexible, enabling a sharp and useful 420mm f/4. Who could want anything more?

I can hardly believe how quickly it focuses. I use it naked on a crop sensor camera, coupling it to a 1.3 and 1.7 teleconverter for 100mm steps to 950mm. This flexibility is exactly what is needed for wildlife photography. One great piece of glass that can cover any situation in wildlife photography. At air shows I set the camera up for 950mm and carry a second camera and a 70-200mm lens with a 1.7 teleconverter to cover myself for any situation. Changing cameras takes only a second and I can fill the frame on every shot. Since you only get one opportunity to get an image, especially in an active environment, I feel carrying the weight and bulk of the two cameras an absolute necessity. The 200mm is toted around in a custom backpack with hard sides, wheels and a pull out handle and the 70-200mm outfit is transported with a shoulder sling. The entire setup works very well. I feel blessed to be able to own such marvelous equipment. AlanRead full review

It's rare when I can simply add a piece of equipment and see measurable results instantly. Adding this lens to my lineup makes my entire shoot better. The images just fly off the screen. And I am not a big fan of VR - but with this thing, it's the real deal. It is ABSOLUTELY incredible. I can shoot handheld at 1/20 shutter - and get reliable, predictable results at 1/60, 1/90, shutter speeds I don't even like to use with my 85mm. For shooting outdoors, it's overkill. Thats not what this is for. It's for shooting slow-paced subjects hand held or on a tripod/mono indoors. Or fast moving subjects at medium lighting indoors, or paired with teleconverters and on and on and on... I love mine. I call it Fiona. And she's beautiful.

Very sharp, very fast focus on my D810. Well balanced, not as heavy to use as I expected. Excellent case.

Folks who do a lot of photography like to stack the odds in their favor. The AI-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF lens does that very well. The f2.8 expands the photographer's possibilities a lot. The depth of field at 20 ft. is 3", which does wonders for the background. The ED glass gives very sharp results. It is comforting to know that images as crisp as possible, will be there in a post-shoot examination. Yes, it's heavy, but a monopod helps. That's why I've bolted one to the carrying case...one hand carries all. I worked with lots of press guys using this lens and I've wanted one for years. I've admired their work and now have one...eBay made it possible. Is it worth the cost...speaking for the obsessed...you bet it is!
