If the story works for you, it’s well crafted. I couldn’t put it down. I’m a heavy reader for the past 50 years, and this surprisingly blew me away. How have I missed this? Bought it used as I do a couple of times a month when I can’t source at my local library. They had 120 copies and I got tired of waiting! I hear Blood Meridian is the best. Again, long waiting list locally. With the exception of a “John Gault” speech, pretty horses was near perfect. I grew up with a lot of horses and later lived in West Texas near San Angelo. A Story You'll Never Forget
Let's face it, Cormac McCarthy wins Pulitzer Prizes for a reason, and most of his books are made into great movies. This is without question a masterpiece. Very much a coming-of-age story set in the west with western themes that only McCarthy can pull off. His poetic narrative is singular and haunting, and beautiful. And yes, it is difficult to get into right from the first sentence. McCarthy uses odd, although very unique phrasing and word choices, sometimes to the hindrance of the story, but it is a highly literary work and that's to be expected. And of course there is a love interest, who he introduces in a most teasing way, which played out in the movie pretty much the same way. In fact, the movie, which is beautifully written and produced, sticks to all the major plot points and the ... (Can't mess with greatness folks) And to top it off, Penelope Cruz was cast as the love interest in the movie, and that alone is a good reason to see it. Both the movie and the book compliment each other in different ways and both are a must watch and a must read. Since McCarthy lives in New Mexico, he convincingly infuses a lot of the lifestyle throughout with wonderful tidbits at every turn. Including plenty of Spanish, which I might add is perfectly written. I read somewhere that he has learned Spanish but I suspect he must've had a little help with it. Either way, nicely done. I loved the story and every word of this novel is exquisite. It's all presented without pretense in a poetic and lyrical style that is captivating and engrossing, and very plausible. I'll admit that this writing style is not for everyone, but the story is so powerful, the characters, so moving, and the drama, so palpable, that nothing can get in its way.

Gripping plot, beautiful language and a bit less morbid than other McCarthy books. Great read.
As offered, I received a former library book, which has a stamp and a library card in the front. Otherwise the condition is very good. I actually like that the book has a history to it and its not fresh from the press.

Great novel, in pretty good shape too.
I'm only 100 pages in, but so far it is one the best things I have ever read. Ever. Incredible, beautiful prose and compelling characters. Since it is C.McC, you know something bad is going to happen, probably something dreadful.
