You get what you pay for, sometimes
Recently the consumer electronics industry has decided to make dvd players increasingly shoddier and now at a very much lower average price point, under $100, I noticed. I had purchased 3 of them a few years ago in the $150 range --2 Mitsubishi & 1 Go Video-- that have failed in not very strenuous low hours of consumer use. Unrepairable, of course they ended up as e-waste. I vowed I would never buy another unit doomed to prematurely fail. I would have bought a Sony replacement, but they have gone the same low-cost, low-reliability route. My answer was the Pioneer DVD V5000 because this is designed specifically as a professional unit with a long operating life. You get what you pay for, I believe. I bought two of these units while they're still available and am 100% pleased with their ... They are the same standard slim dimensions as consumer dvd junk units and operation is completely straightforward . Pioneer does make another pro unit rated at 50,000 hours service life more geared towards the recording professional, but for my purposes (at $1000) this more costly Pioneer unit seems like it would be overkill. This model at $400 seems like money well spent. Purchasing used in good condition I believe will prove a much better bet than buying a brand new piece of potential e-waste player.
